Topic: Greetings! Posted: May 10 2005 at 02:43 |
Hey! Just want to introduce myself. Been a progger since 1983. Kind of got into everyone backwards, but i guess all that counts is that I got the music at all.
Asia to old Yes and ELP, to King Crimson, to Kate Bush, to Genesis
Yes 90125 to Yessongs, to Yesshows, to Relayer ... (I remember the first time I realized that Roundabout and Changes were from the same band)
Rush GUP, to Police, to U2 (The Unforgettable Fire)
Funny, back then I hadn't heard of any of these bands except Rush, whom I hated because of Working Man. I had no idea at the time that New World Man was also Rush! Asia was just another new group, and so was Yes. (Steve who?)
I know most prog fans experience physical pain when they here the 5 opening chords of "Heat Of The Moment", but that first Asia album did it for me. "Only Time Will Tell" sold me on the album, "Without You" was heard at just the right place and time to open my mind to all there was behind this band. (That, and the album cover)
In spite of this, my favorite prog band has always been King Crimson (with Kate Bush a close second, but that's for another forum!)
Looking foreward to talkin' prog with everyone.

Hi Grimm,
A very warm welcome! Your initial experience of prog sounds very similar to mine; I got into Rush Signals, Yes Drama & Genesis 3 Sides live, then worked my way backwards... it took me longer than some people as I was the only one in my school, so I had no-one to swap with... but I will always remember how I first felt when I heard 'Signals'...
BTW, I saw Asia in Hamburg a couple of years ago, supporting Kansas... great gig!
Enjoy the forum and take time to read the excellently written prog directory.. you'll learn a lot!

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

You've clearly got too much time on your hands.... so get back to your house cleaning. This is Grimm's site, not yours!

Ah, your welcomes are most appreciated, even from Snow Dog, with whom I seem to have gotten on the wrong side of already. I have no brothers, so you must be mistaken.

No, I came up with it as a username for the very first forum I joined, kevinswatch.com, a message board for my favorite sci-fi / fantasy author, Stephen R. Donaldson. The Grim was an evil, magic storm that rained a black ash on its victims that burned like acid when the flakes landed. I just thought Grimm suited me, and it was related to the best-known story of SR Donaldson so I added an 'm' and used it. After joining a few more forums I decided it would be best to keep the same alias & avatar for all of them.
Are you sorry you asked?

As much as Gdub's filled you in, you should be in need of a sphincter replacement.
BTW Reerrrrr, er, Tony. Stop changing your lipstick... my sw***tz is beginning to look like a rainbow.
Welcome aboard, Grimbo... Don't feed the trolls.
