Okay, forget your high-end audiophile equipment for a moment and give me some suggestions on a reliable and decent-sounding turntable for under $100. My own is showing its age (1987, to be exact, and it wasn't top of the line then) but I've never had any complaints about its performance or sound.

What is it?

It's a Technics SL model. Complete with that cheesy grey-black and chrome futurist finish that 80s equipment makers seemed to love.

It says "SL-J100". Not a lot of info about it on the net, but I picked it up on clearance at a music store the summer before my senior year of high school. I remember thay also had a Roland TR-808 for about the same price...that would have been a better investment!

Oh yeah -dems say Ortofon styli in perticoolar shouldnae be cleanit wiv alcohol-solution due tae th' binder used bein' noo too fond o' alcohol.

Wallace ha' dis same Ortofon fer cummin' on 8 yar now, an' ah washes needle mebbe 4 times a week wif 60% alcohol (onna camel hair brush).
No prob.
An' needle still luks prime unner a microjobbyscope.)
