I watched Wim Wenders' Wings of Desire last night and was really impressed by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' music.

It did sound fairly "arty" or progressive...

What do you all think ? After all, we do find really surprising bands in the archive...

In a sense, I'd say Nick's stuff is quite progressive.

hey, that's a good question. I have recently got into his music and  was only thinking the other day that he'd  be VERY appropriate for PA !!  Excellent topic - glad someone else likes him too!

Or maybe you are talking about the work he did with Kylie Minogue

i havent heard the bad seeds but i have heard his band previous to the bad seeds (The birthday Party)if u havent heard it its worth checking out (reminds me alot of classic beefheart stuff)

ive heard a couple of songs by Nick Cave and liked them but havent heard anything progressive yet.

im thinking of giving some of his albums a try, with what albums should i start? or which ones are your favorite?

actually his The Best of collection is an excellent introduction to the variety of his work  & the tracks were ordered purposely to flow together like a complete album in itself, rather than just a chronological list. Its very popular with the fans which says a lot.Apart from that I'd recommend

  1. the latest double album Abattoir Blues/Lyre of Orpeheus
  2. Murder Ballads
  3. the Boatman's Call
  4. Let love In
  5. No More Shall We Part
  6. Henry's Dream - a bit less accessible but very rewarding

The Boatman's Call is my favourite ... but its full of ballads, slow, vey darkly beautiful  ... definitely late night music ...  ie not recommended to be played in your open top sports car on a sunny day crusin' down to the beach with your hot date

A good call on some great tracks felona !  Being a fellow Aussie I thought I would wade in and contribute my 2 cents.  Not sure if Nick is Prog though.  He does use a fusion of blues, rock and others but not quite to the extent that I would call him and the Bad Seeds prog.

If you get a chance to see him live do so and he will blow you away!!

Can't think of anything cool at the moment ...

yes. its definitely night music. ive been listening to the cd, and so far i think its quite good. i was already familiar with the songs "into my arms" and "(are you) the one ive been waiting for?" (these songs were the ones that pushed me to try more of their music), but on a first listen i can already say that soon i will have other favorites.

Abattoir Blues/Lyre of Orpeheus is pretty prog. This is the only way Kylie would get into the Archives!

I've seen Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds five times now, and he never fails to deliver (although Warren Ellis always scares the out of me ).

All I can say is roll on next Thursday at Alexandra Palace (London)
