I don't remember where I found this, but I recently discovered that Johnny Depp has been asked to star as Syd Barrett in a new movie about Syd Barrett when he was in Floyd.

I think it will be good if it is made and could even possibly bring some new proggers here because if Johnny Depp is in it people will want to see it and they will learn who Syd is and be interested in Pink Floyd. It's about time Syd gets the public recognition he desearves, although he does get plenty at this site though.

I'm interested in knowing what you think about the idea and movie if it is made, and if you can find any other info about this please post.

That would be very cool.I think Depp would play a good Barrett,he has a knack for choosing eclectic rolls and turning in great performances.

If he can pull off Gene Wilder's character in Charley and the Chocolate Factory I think he can certainly do a a schizophrinic, crazed piper.

I read that he wanted to make a movie about Syd, but not that he was going to star in it.

I'd much rather see a movie about the 1980-81 tour and subsequent breakup of floyd

but the depp thing'd be cool too!

imagine depp winning an oscar for his performance.

that would be unthinkably

depp is a really, really good actor too.

They should be careful, when doing movie about still living person, who has gone insane and has been exploited finacialy by others. If the subject is homogenized through Hollywood values, I fear it will be lousy movie. Depp is OK actor, but most of his movies are terrible.  "Sixth Gate" was great, though.

What makes you think that he's being exploited? As far as I know, he's still receiving royalties for the airplay of the titles he wrote for PF.

He said he wants to portray Syd in a movie, don't think there are any plans yet.

In Pirates Depp did an imitation of Keith Richard. As Willie Wonker, he did Michael jackson. So who's persona might he adopt for Syd Barrett?
