Personally I think they personify Prog rock. Its amazing he was able to play ANYTHING through those coke bottles...

Well the problem actually is he doesn't wear them.
It's all keeping up appearences. Glasses aren't cool, so Emerson doesn't wear them.
He rather play badly than look uncool
