2 PCs and a laptop here. What's really sweet is I finally set up our 802.11g network.
So next time you read one of my posts, think of this: it's possible that I wrote it on the toliet.

Whoops, we've been moved to main discussions. No time for tangents, men- back to the subject of women in prog.
Uh, how 'bout those Fe-Mellotrons, eh Peter?

Now there's an image I could have done without whilst sitting here eating my lunch.
Back on thread - I'm male (although married, which I think counts as a separate gender...), and the last time I looked, Vicky Garten was female - hang on, I'll just check...
Ho, Yus!
Definitely female

Wow.. its nice to have all these females here.. and we not only share a common bond... but we all basically can't stand Peter Hammil's voice!! How marvelous is that!!!!
And I was starting to miss Shirinking Violet and Petra. Altho I see Petra still posts every now and then.
And yes, you can definitely have a real passion for prog!

I guess men and women are attracted to prog for more or less the same reasons. Why it attracts a majority of males, though, remains a mystery. I would be tempted to say that women are generally more people oriented whereas guys are more willing to sit alone at a computer and shut the world away to enjoy their music.
It must all be in the genes. That’s why we have chic flicks and d..ck flics, why traditional female professions include teaching, nursing and customer service whereas guys are so much more adept with computers and machinery (I mean, how often do you see a female, hands behind her back, stand and stare at a construction site lol!).
Prog seems to be first and foremost a music lover’s music, the prerequisite for liking it having more to do with musical sensibility than gender. In fact, I’m convinced that if all of us were to have our musical abilities tested, we’d all score higher than average (alongwith jazz and classical buffs, of course).
Nice to meet you too, Valravennz !
And James, your wife’s comments about Hammill sure made gave me a chuckle ! I suppose we, women, insist on a minimum of aesthetics... Too bad, because Hammill is an extremely talented lyricist.
Luv,
Boo

I've probably learned more about prog from a female than any other...
Thanks, 3f8s!!

When you speak, is it you that hears? Are your ears full? You can't hear anything at all.

Great thread. I started the thing and I'm glad I did! I'm
always interested in the people behind the act and the women commenting
here are wonderful. What I want to add at this point is I'm male,
I can't stand Hammill's voice (visions of a frog with its foot caught
under a rock come to mind), and (threefates) 'Shrinking Violet' is my
favorite song from Mostly Autumn. So whatever the skew in the
prog rock/gender thing is it seems once we're here there is little that
seperates us!
Blessings to all!!!
PS: My wife could never stand Yes or much of anything else I
listen to (except for Division Bell - she thinks DG's voice, lyrics,
and the overall sound are sensuous). A few years ago she went
with me to see Yes live (she loves me )
and she loved it!! She completely 'got it' while watching them do
their thing. And she hasn't listened to them since. But for
that wonderful moment being there was priceless.
