Topic: the Top 100 album list Posted: May 02 2005 at 19:16 |
If I got it right, the technick of making this list is to time the amount of ratings in the avarage rate to get the popularity of an album. This is not a bad idea and the list is not surprising. But .........
I think you need to do another list of highly rated albums (let's say of at least 9 ratings so not any unknown with 1 or 2 ratings will skip in, but talk talk's "spirit of eden" that is the highest rated album I've seen here, will be included). In this list will be the albums accordings to their avarage rates only, which will make a whole different list and I guess - a wider range of music.
Taking talk talk as a good example I claim that most of us are familiar with the 1970 - 1977 english prog music who created the genre & dominates it (with good reasons). However there are some great music made later or elsewhere that we are less familiar with. Like I happen to know talk talk, some others know another great band and it will be easy to search for good music we do not know through such a list (cause you need only few excelent ratings to be on this list).
It will also be interesting to see what albums will be on both lists (and to see that dream theatre is much less important then it seems from the existing list).
What do you say ?

Bands like Marillion or Dream Theater should have VERY limited places on the list - not that they aren't any good, it's just that they feed off the giants of the 70s.

And Jesus said unto John, "come forth and receive eternal life..."
Unfortunately, John came fifth and was stuck with a toaster.

"giants of the 70s" - if its one thing im sick of its that
classification, everybody knows all those bands, like honestly this
forum is not going to help diversify your progressive knowlegde if
everything comes back to the bands decicedly known as "gaints" (elp,
kc, gensis, etc, etc WHATEVER) ...mabey you should start more forums
about bands that youve found that may not be quite so
popular....definantly the list is a good idea. But mabey you should
start a list about bands that arent even on the top 50 spot list or at
least a very annonamous placing, that way this webpage might actually
bring something and help make progressive music more popular again....
...My 2 cents
good idea the list

Some ***** ratings are often granted automatically indeed. It seems
like some reviewers base their ratings only on listening to a few prog
bands... We just have to accept different opinions.
It's good to have free speach (with some rules of manners)!

to vlado - sorry, do'nt speak german.
to netsnjfan - I did not spend much more time on the US. count for what anyway ? the avarage rates of dream theatre is not so high. It's the amount of ratings pushing them up.
to snow dog - I lived in afikim for 22 years (years ago).
to the rest - thanks for the support on the idea
