ok, so if dream theater wrote part 1 in 1992 did that mean that scenes from a memory was written at the same time otherwise they wouldnt have known to leave it as part 1. on the otherhand if they planned to finish it a few albums later then it was lucky that they didn't split up or die etc or it wudda been left unfinished!

so when was SFAM written? 92 or later?

It was written in 1999, when the record was released i presume. They had planned a sequel to the song, because part 1 had left alot of questions unanswered.. and it ended up becoming an entire album. A masterpeice

they got lucky. Its like korn calling their best of volume 1, they will blatently split up before they have enough new material for a voulme 2!!! Its risky to plan ahead that far

Metropolis was planned as two songs actually, and Part 1 ended up on Images and Words, with nothing yet written for part two. Part II was intended to be one long song, in the vein of a Change of Seasons, or even Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence....but in the end it became an entire CD!

Actually, Petrucci wrote pt. 1 and called it 'Metropolis pt. 1' as a joke.....they never intended on making a sequal....after much prodding from the fans as to when they were going to come out with 'Metropolis pt. 2' they decided to write a sequal........it's true, it was orignally written as one long track and was acually meant to be released on FII......FORTUNATELY, they held off and waited untill the song morphed into the conceptual monster 'Scenes From A Memory'....

Yeah, I remember listening to the commentary on the Lives Scenes DVD and they were talking about they were recording parts of Metropolis pt. 2 in 1997. The little bits and pieces that remained were Strange Deja Vu and One Last time, at least that's what I know.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking of... for some reason I thought "his words I can not hear" came at the ending of Fatal Tragedy .

Didn't they also write Titanic (the album's theme, which can be heard in Through Her Eyes, The Spirit Carries On, and Finally Free) beforehand, too? Or am I getting confused again?

All I know is, thank goodness they decided on the Part 2. It is one of my favorite albums. And I barely even listen to progressive metal. The only two prog metal bands I listen to are DT and Ayreon.

Scenes from a Memory is a monter prog album musically, and I dare even say that the concept is pretty good - although I have heard better.  But again, musically it is flawless.  Thank God for that album being written in '92 or '99 - the best thing is that it was released

Actually Metropolis Part One was written back in 1989, and it's a good
thing they waited to release it till they had LaBrie, because even though
LaBrie doesn't exactly have the best voice in the world, their first singer
was atrocious to say the least. Part One is masterful but Moore's backing
synths in the verses made it cheesier than it should have been. But SFAM
is an absolute masterpiece, one of the best albums ever released

woo you used the word atrocious! me and my friends love that word and are often atrocities ourselves! I love labrie, he is one of my fav vocalists ever because he puts in so much passion and emotion and it works really well, charlie dominici is definetly a horrifically bad vocalist and im glad he got the axe cos he really puts me off their debut album.

Part 2 was actually written in 1996-97ish when Dream Theater were going to record the Falling Into Infinity album. The Berklee guys orginally wanted to release the song on a double album with FII, but of course the new label refused to do so and they had to wait until 1999. Before it was orginally a 30 minute long epic, but then with new member Rudess, they made into the concept album we know today.
