Piano - 5/5. Every album with piano just earns extra points of interest for me. Just listen to John Hawken in the Illusion albums. And is really love the few folk albums that feature this instrument.
Bass - 2/5. Essential, but you have to be very good (I mean, Chris Squire) to make it no be a background instrument. It's easy to put it in the front and make it badly.
Guitar - 5/5. Electric guitars are essential in rock. The exception being Renaissance most of the times.
Drums - 2/5. Just background. Please, no drum solos.
Synths/Keyboards 4/5
Didgeridoo - What the h....?
Harmonica - 1/5. Sorry, doesnt like this one at all. Maybe in some Bruce Springsteen songs...
Trumpet - 2/5 I usually like these kind of instruments only when they are in an orchestra.
Flute - 5/5.

Piano (7/10) Depends on how it's used, a 7'n as it's best though.
Bass (10/10) 70's progressive rock... where you can smell the bass
Guitar (10/10) Depends much on the player, though the instruments itself get full points.
Drums (10/10) Only full points if played well
Synths/Keyboards (10/10) Full points if it 70's progressive else a big zero.
Didgeridoo (0/10) I love progressive world music though this is just a buzzing stick
Harmonica (1/10) Only for bluesy music.
Trumpet (7/10) It depends on the rest of the band...
Flute (8/10) Fits perfect in progressive rock.
Kazoo (4/10) Maybe in some 60's psychedelia... |

Piano - 4/5 It can always add a little flavour and makes for good
accompaniment on softer songs.
Bass - 5/5 My instrument and when in the hands of a really good player
(A Tony Levin or Jack Bruce) can be as interesting to listen to as a guitar.
Guitar - 5/5 Obvious a must for rock
Drums - 5/5 Drum solos after bass solos are really interesting to listen
too.
Synths/Keyboards - 2/5 I only really find them interesting in really
atmospheric music like Pink Floyd. I find a lot of Symphony X's music is
hurt by their overuse.
Didgeridoo- 10/5 most awesome sound ever.
Harmonica - 3/5 more appropriate for blues than prog really.
Trumpet - 2/5 Never really liked the sound of trumpets in rock music
Flute - 4/5 not my favourite woodwind.

I've never heard a really good didgeridoo solo, neither have I ever heard a kazoo used on a prog record (as far as I know). Shame really.

This is a weird topic. Oh, well....
Piano 4/5 awesome
Bass 5/5 I love bass
Guitar 4/5 I guess I just kinda
take guitar for granted, but I don't pay that much attention to it... I
gave it a four because it's always there and I can't really imagine
what it would be like without one
Drums 5/5 drums rock
Synths/Keyboards 5/5 I like synths
Didgeridoo 2/5 I haven't really heard enough digeridoo to form a good opinion, but from what I have heard, it doesn't suck
Harmonica 1/5 harmonica, on the other hand...
Trumpet 3/5 don't hear trumpet
too much, but Flea proved on the Mars Volta's albums that it can be
awesome. however, only one case of awesome trumpet playing isn't enough
for me to give it more than 3
Flute 3/5 see "Trumpet", replace "Flea" with "Ian Anderson" and "The Mars Volta" with "Jethro Tull"
Kazoo 2.5/5 see "Didgeridoo". gets an extra .5 because it sounds funny

Doesn't everyone know that the mellotron is the greatest instrument
invented by humankind? Duh!
I'm also fond of the dulcimer and the sackbut. OK, maybe not the
sackbut.

Piano 5/5 (there are many examples of great piano moments in prog)
Bass 5/5 (my fave instrument - when played by Chris, Geddy or other greats)
Guitar 4/5 (essential in rock, less in prog)
Drums 5/5 (I love all kinds of percussion, especially if played by masters like Peart or Bruford)
Synths/Keyboards 4/5 (I prefer the Mellotron or the Hammond organ to synths)
Didgeridoo - never heard in prog, though I've seen it played by buskers
Harmonica 0/5 (not a prog instrument at all, and I don't like it anyway)
Trumpet 2/5 (not a typical rock instrument, but there are a few good examples)
Flute 5/5 (Ian Anderson rules!)
Kazoo - what the hell...?

I didn't think this was going to be taken seriously, more of a parody thread. These ones make forums fun though

Drums ***** Rock without drums!? Essential
Synths/Keyboards ***** Keyboards are the most varied instruments of all!! Essential.

Piano 7/10 not as emotional sa some guitars and keys...
Guitar 10/10 - love the elctric gutar as much as the classical one! So many faces it has...
bass 6/10 - A bass player must be really good to make the bass sound interesting (Primus, Red hot chili peppers - those are bands that make the bass sound great)
Drums 6/10 - like with the bass.. Although You can't get enough of Portnoy and other superb ones... But still, solos shouldent be 10 min long!
Synths/Keyboards 10/10 - a must have.. it can imitate a piano and its has as many faces as the guitar.. Only those 2 instruments gave me reall shivers from time to time...
Didgeridoo 4/10 - in stranhe and funy songs - great... but the in the rest... NOT!
Harmonica 5/10 - Don't nkow why I don't like it.. it has a strange, irritating sound...
Trumpet 2/10 - in prog? NOT!!! Although its not tragic...
Flute 8/10 - all flutes are great instruments, and they have a great sound (alto flute rlz!)
Kazoo - whats that?
The human voice - 10/10!!!!!! My fav instrument, when played rightly...

Piano - never trust anything with that many keys and no lock
Bass - A nice fish with chips on the side
Guitar - block of wood to pose infront of the mirror with if you don't have a tennis racket
Drums - my ears would be lost without them
Synths/Keyboards - allowed people who play with one finger at a time to think they are musicians
Didgeridoo - well, what did you expect from people without shampoo or hairdressers
Harmonica - mouth organ, organ mouth. That's the intros over, now fellate
Trumpet - instrument for simpletons who can only use 3 fingers at a time
Flute - malicious instrument designed to poke the eye out of anyone standing next to you
Kazoo - ideal instrument for learning modes, complex scales, inversions and sounding like a bee in a tin
