What are some other good modern prog bands to listen to? I already listen to these bands alot The Mars Volta Porcupine Tree Dream Theater Dredg Godspeed You! Black Emperor TOOL
What are some other great modern prog bands? I have all the old stuff too, ie Yes, RUSH, Pink Floyd etc, but right now I want to listen to more modern bands, with a different sound than old prog bands. So what are some suggestions? My friend told me that the Sound of Animals Fighting was good, but I couldnt find any of it in stores, or on amazon. Suggestions? |

Try Pendragon - I've recently discovered them and they're excellent. New CD out at the end of August.

Good melodic modern prog with lots of keyboards and some beautiful guitar work. Have a look at their entry on this site - there's 3 tracks you can download there. "Good as gold" and "Paintbox" are really good. |

if you like GY!BE, check out A Silver Mt. Zion (post-rock with some members of GY!BE) Sigur Ros (post-rock from iceland), Red Sparrowes(post-rock from canada?), Chevreuil (guitar-and-drums instrumental math-rock from france), and (though they're widely considered non-prog) if you're into the heavier side of things, try ISIS. |

The beginning of Paintbox makes me think of The Butterfly Man by Arena. No surprise, I mean, it's Clive. ![]() |

GYBE isnt my fav band they're ok, but postrock generally isnt really something i'd choose to listen to. I'll check out pendragon when I can. I like the sound of dredg's music, it would be cool if there was a similar band or something, i dunno

But on the second thought - from your list above I know only Porcupine tree (not too bad, but nothing special), Dream theater (good, but far from genius) and Tool (complete rubbish), so I think maybe my list of recommendations above is not really good for you ??? |

no its good, im gonna pick some of these bands and listen to them when i get back from work today. bah, tool isnt rubbish, lateralus is really really good. i hated tool at first but every time i listen to it i enjoy it more and more. Tool isn't my favorite band by far, but they definitely aren't rubbish. I don't really like symphonic prog, so which of those are symphonic |

I've recently found a smashing new Finnish band called Jeavestone. They describe their music as "prog'n'roll" and by the sound of their first album Mind The Soup that is pretty much an accurate description. There are some clips on their site www.jeavestone.com.

I'm afraid almost all of them are symphonic, probably except for A.C.T. (more art), Gordian Knot and Kopecky (more fusion), Pain of Salvation (more metal), but have a listen anyway, you never know..........
