Guru Guru's track "Was für 'ne Welt!" ("What a world!") from their album "Hey Du!" is self-ironic about them being in the studo with a displeased producer, but the lyrics are in German.

Not prog, but I love these Lyrics from Morrissey, about both a fans adoration for a rock star, and also the record companies greedy tactics to cash in on the stars death...
Paint a Vulgar Picture - The Smiths
At the record company meeting On their hands - a dead star And oh, the plans they weave And oh, the sickening greed
At the record company party On their hands - a dead star The sycophantic sl*gs all say : "I knew him first, and I knew him well"
Re-issue ! Re-package ! Re-package ! Re-evaluate the songs Double-pack with a photograph Extra Track (and a tacky badge)
A-list, playlist "Please them , please them !" "Please them !" (sadly, THIS was your life)
But you could have said no If you'd wanted to You could have said no If you'd wanted to
BPI, MTV, BBC "Please them ! Please them !" (sadly this was your life)
But you could have said no If you'd wanted to You could have walked away ...Couldn't you ?
I touched you at the soundcheck You had no real way of knowing In my heart I begged "Take me with you ... I don't care where you're going..."
But to you I was faceless I was fawning, I was boring Just a child from those ugly new houses Who could never begin to know
Who could never really know Oh ...
Best of ! Most of ! Satiate the need Slip them into different sleeves ! Buy both, and feel deceived
Climber - new entry, re-entry World tour ! ("media whore") "Please the Press in Belgium !" (THIS was your life...)
And when it fails to recoup ? Well, maybe : You just haven't earned it yet, baby
I walked a pace behind you at the soundcheck You're just the same as I am What makes most people feel happy Leads us headlong into harm
So, in my bedroom in those 'ugly new houses' I danced my legs down to the knees But me and my 'true love' Will never meet again ...
At the record company meeting On their hands - at last ! - a dead star ! But they can never taint you in my eyes No, they can never touch you now
No, they cannot hurt you, my darling They cannot touch you now But me and my 'true love' Will never meet again
|
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

tool's Hooker With a Penis, critical of those who accuse bands of "selling out"
I met a boy wearing Vans 501s and a Dope Beastie tee nipple rings and New tattoos that claimed that he Was OGT From '92 The first EP. And in between Sips of Coke He told me that He thought We were sellin' out Layin' down Suckin' up To the man.
Well now I've got some A dvice for you little buddy. Before you point the finger You should know that I'm the man
And if I'm the man
Then you're the man, and He's the man as well so you can Point that f**kin' finger up your ass.
All you know about me is what I've sold you,
Dumb f**k.
I sold out long before you ever even
heard my name.
I sold my soul to make a record,
Dip sh*t, and you bought one.

Tinsel Town Rebellion Frank Zappa
From Madam Wong's to Starwood
To the Whiskey on the Strip
You can hear the crashing, blasting strum
Of bands that come to be real hip
And get a record contract
From a talent scout some day
They'll sell their ass, their cocks and balls
They'll take the check 'n walk away
If they're lucky they'll get famous
For a week or two perhaps
They'll buy some ugly clothes to wear
And hope the business don't collapse
Before some stupid magazine
Decides they're really good
They're a Tinsel Town Rebellion Band
From downtown Hollywood
Tinsel Town Rebellion,
Tinsel Town Rebellion Band
It's a little bitty Tinsel Town Rebellion
A Tinsel Town Rebellion Band
They used to play all kinds of stuff
And some of it was nice
Some of it was musical
But then they took some guy's advice
To get a record deal, he said,
They would have to be more punk
Forget their chops and play real dumb
Or else they would be sunk
So off they go to S.I.R. to learn some stupid riffs
And practice all their poses
In between their powder sniffs
Chop a line now, snort it up now
And when they think they've got it
They launch a new career
Who gives a f**k if what they play
Is somewhat insincere
Did you know that in Tinsel Town the people down there
Think that substance is a bore
And if your New Wave group looks good
They'll hurry on back for more
Of leather groups and plastic groups
And groups that look real queer
The Tinsel Town aficionados
Come to see and not to hear
But then again this system works
As perfect as a dream
It works for all of those record company pricks
Who come to skim the cream
From the cesspools of excitement
Where Jim Morrison once stood
It's the Tinsel Town Rebellion
From downtown Hollywood
Is everybody happy?
Oh, never mind!
No problem

| amazing song. its rare that tool ever let loose like that. most of their lyrics and songs are much more thought provoking and serious. this is still a very clever theme!

Interesting, there is so much stuff out there. I only knew Queen´s Death on Two Legs so far.
I do not know if Led Zeppelin did any kind of song like the above but they often mentioned (in interviews) that they weren´t interested in releasing any singles anymore due to pressure from the record company (before they founded their own label).

The picture was posed ready to push that black and white charm Highlighted in gloss and calligraphy for that rock and roll impact You've got to wear your pout and your million dollar smile Or look like the blues and you have been hanging out for a while
I cried inside when I saw it all done for the cause of art And I've got to laugh when I see your sincerity
The simple things that seemed so good just don't taste the same The projection's in need of a focus, it's all out of frame
It's not that the price has been set too high It's never too high It's just that I'm not sure I want... To sell to those that want to buy Go through hell for those that want to buy Please don't take me the wrong way If I don't excel for those that want to buy
Who's to say our voice should not be heard Contrary to your opinion we will not go away If something like this meant so much to you Would you walk away and leave it Or die with the taste still in your mouth?
Mine is might I am that's right, a bastard with a point So you think your artistic insecurity can be shielded? Cellophane personalities keep you nice and fresh I sit with pen in hand wondering what to write Should I cut myself and paint in crimson Or use my plastic argument? You sample words and collect the royalties You're stereotyped with gold in hand I'm naked for the world to see
The thing I think that scares me the most Is that talent is seldom considered It's all in a name as the waiting game Grows tight around your throat I'm sick of being passed on this time I'm bored with all of your letters They just hang on the wall for all to see who the next fool is
Skeleton bound delusions, freaks inside your head Come to life as you realize insane is not so bad We must be daft to want more rope To feed the cause you criticize We took the time to turn your heads Now you will see what we're after lyrics by ray and brett
