Does anybody like Janes Addiction? If so, don't you think there is something prog about them? Listen to the track "Jane Says" (on Nothing's Shocking') and compare it with 'Emotions' by Family (on Family Entertainment). now that i mention it, where do Family fit in...?

I like Jane's Addiction - but I never heard of Family. I'm sorry if my post came across a bit rude. I'm not as annoyed as other members of the forum are about people asking the same question over and over again ("Is xyz prog?"). But I'm beginning to get weary of posting the same answers day after day ...

Why could anyone believe that Jane's Addiction are prog? The Mars Volta have some passages on their album where they sound a bit like Jane's Addiction. But those are not the most progressive passages of the album. Maybe there are reasons to believe that Jane's Addiction are Psychedelic Rock - but then again, not every kind of Psychedelic Rock is Prog.

woo! I see your point about everybody asking is so-and-so-prog! Family's best material was done in the transitional period between psych and prog, maybe post-psych a better term. If you like comus, you may like family, comus been as near to an acoustic version of family as they are to anything in late 60s early 70's rock. Actually comus arent really like anybody at all..but Roger wooton from Comus has a vocal style similar to Roger Chapman from family.

There is some great footage of family on the Isle of wight (1970) DVD, amazing live...

I like Jane's, mainly from their Ritual de lo Habitual album.  Strays was cool, very Led Zep.  Navarro is an impressive guitarist - he makes it all look very easy!

Love Ritual, it's a fantastic album but really kicks into gear from Been Caught Stealing onwards. 'Then She Did...' is my all time favourite Jane's song - amazing Zepp-alike stuff.

I think Dave Navarro is a hugely underrated guitar player. Check out his amazing, simple yet wonderfully effective solo on The Red Hot Chilli Peppers' 'My Friends' from 'One Hot Minute' - the guy is great. But what the hell is he doing on the VH1 INXS-Rock Star shambles - what an embarrassment for all concerned.

I also like Janes Addiction. Nothing's Shocking is brilliant, and Strays is a fine album

strays is cool, so is nothings shocking, but ritual de lo habitual has to be heard to be believed, the most progressive of them alll, especially, 'three days'...
