Heh heh ... you said it ... the music inside definitely calls for some Roger Dean, instead we get Brian Davison looking like a slimmed-down version of Demis Roussos, and Patrick Moraz pre-empting the disco-look by a few years

Yes! a great album. I'm not really into The Nice, but Refugee is just over-the-top enough (like ELP, really). Moraz is a wicked player. I just picked the vinyl up for $3 at a used record store in my area...I knew it was considered prog, but the album cover made me wonder if it could possibly be any good.

I read that Rod Stewart was brought it to record a guide vocal for "In a broken dream" but this version ended up being released.

Lee Jackson of the Nice and Refugee had no connection with the Python Lee Jackson group. They were an Australian band for which Rod Stewart sang on three tracks. If my memory serves me correctly, In a broken dream was recorded in 1968. Rod Stewart never sang better and the remastered version for CD has to be heard to be believed. Refugee's album was underrated - I like 'Rit Mikeley'.
PS. Fish Out of Water by Chris Squire featuring Patrick Moraz is good too.

Refugees album is great and I strongly recomend it to anyone who likes keyboard led prog!

I often wondered about the Lee Jackson connection with that record, but I don't think that it's anything to do with The Nice's Lee Jackson- Python Lee Jackson are I believe, an Australian combo. Rod Stewart was a jobbing musician in the 1960s and made various records with a lot of people, and ended up with this band somehow. The track 'In A Broken Dream' was released only when Rod was famous too, I think- around 1972/3?

I read somewhere that Jackson Heights did 5 albums, and that Davison was part of the group for a brief period too ... not too sure about my info on this one ...
Also does anybody know if Lee Jackson has anything to do with the group Python Lee Jackson ... which had Rod Stewart on lead vocals for the awesome psych-era single In A Broken Dream?

Patrick Moraz was in amazing form on Refugee's only album, and both Lee Jackson and Brian Davison seemed to have improved as instrumentalists from their days with The Nice (that's not to say they were bad then, btw) ... amazingly even Jackson's vocals work for the most part ...
