I saw Rush in Wembley with a magician "entertaining" us. I also saw Steve Hackett with a guy who had a puppet rat as a support act. As I remember he came on stage for one of the encore tunes.

Anyone else add to those?

Nothing as weird as that, but in their early days Gentle Giant toured as the support for Black Sabbath. That was a mismatch and a half...

It's just I'm listening to "Voyage of the Acolyte" now and the memory popped into my head. I saw Sabbath a few times in the early 70s. I wonder if I saw them with Gentle Giant?

If I remember right, Sabbath also had Van Halen as a support before they (VH) were famous. The Sabs got blown off the stage.

Ian Dury always had really weird (and bad) support acts like puppet shows. I suspect it was deliberate to make him look good.

Or even Genesis at Milton keynes Oct. 2nd 1982:

Genesis

The blues band (err, they were very bluesy..)

Talk Talk - when they were a synth/pop Duran/Spandau clone. I have never seen so many objects thrown at one band.

i went to www.thecomatorium.com before seeing the mars volta live and they said nobody will be the support act so i was like woo they are gonna come straight on the stage.

after an hour of listening to crap dj tunes i looked behind me to see a DJ off stage. this was DJ Nobody. i felt screwed over but when TMV played it was immense. 2.5 hours and only 7 tracks!

After Metallica releases their masterpiece, Master of Puppets they were pretty much seen as one of the biggest and most redefining metal acts since sabbath. They ended up supporting Ozzy Osbourne and apparently most of the fans came just to see metallica over the main act! Metallica blew Ozzy out of the water.

You may not believe this, but it's the truth.  In the late 1960s, Jimi Hendrix was going to tour the U.S.  It never happened, because the tour was canceled.  But guess who was scheduled to open up for him on most of his dates?

Hawkwind and Van der Graaf Generator used to tour together, but as far as I know no-one was the opening act for the other, they were equals. There has always been some loose connection between them, by the way; for example Nic Potter played bass on a solo album ("Fresh Blood")of Hawkwind keyboarder Steve Swindells; the other musicians on that album are Huw Lloyd-Langton and Simon King. Also remember the co-operation of members of Amon Düül 2 (John Weinzierl and Dave Anderson), Hawkwind (Robert Calvert and Dave Anderson), Van der Graaf Generator (Guy Evans) and the Ozric Tentacles (Ed Wynne and Joie Hinton) on "Die Lösung" of the British Amon Düül (still not in the archives, maybe I should add them). Hawkwind, Gong (and Mother Gong), Amon Düül 2 and Van der Graaf Generator are closely related due to the exchanging of musicans one way or the other.

The way I heard it, it was even odder: Hendrix was supporting the
Monkees! I also heard that the tour actually took place, with Hendrix
lasting for exactly two gigs before losing his temper at having to play for
overexcited prepubescents and walking off stage - and off the tour -
after giving them the finger.

I know that a double headline tour between MAGMA and GONG took place
in France, because Giorgio Gomelsky was managing both outfits. That
would have been an incredible experience, but apparently there was quite
a culture clash between the two bands: MAGMA couldn't believe how
relaxed and indisciplined GONG were, whilst GONG couldn't stomach
MAGMA's more academic, rigid approach to their work.

Jimi Hendrix died exactly 20 years before i was born (September 18, 1990, he died September 18, 1970)

Very similar story to plodder. I saw a magician/paper folder support Cardiacs (and he was great!).

I did play a gig where the support act was a Thai chef who made curry onstage and handed out the audience in little bowls. The most poular support act I've ever seen!

i was born september 19th 1987. very irrelvant i know but know you know when to send me presents. preferably some prog rock goodies like a rick wakeman cape!

The same year I saw Tull at wakefield in a mini festival. Supporting were Marillion (almost stole the show),Lindisfarne, The Blues band and ------- Quang Chung (Later renamed Wang Chung). They were pelted with everything (festival conditions ). Who the hell signed these guys up had a great sense of humour.

The Who opened for Hermans Hermits

Of course on the other side was one of the greatest double bills of all time Jetro Tull opening for Led Zeppelin.

Deep Purple and some classical band called The Planets opening for them a few years back. Then again Deep Purple are notorious for using naff support bands.
