Hackett
Howe
Winwood
Morse
Hillage
Rothary
Walsh (with a different instrument, but still...)
Hogarth (yet another one...)

non prog ones:
Vai
Stevens
Stills

do these (sur)names suggest something in common?
is it a coincidence?
am I dealing too much with nonsense things like this?

any other suggestions?

Listen to Turkish psych/prog; you won't regret:
Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!)

It just goes to show there were a lot of kids whose parents called them Steve in the 50s and 60s. I knew loads when I was at school, sadly none of them grew up to be famous guitarists.

Good point. The same happened in several periods here: During times of war many kids were named "Savas" (the second "s" has a little sign under it, pronounced "savash", which means "War") and many, including those born just after the war were named "Baris" (again, "s" has a little comma under it. Do I need to tell the meaning?!?!?)
This includes the well known Turkish singer (who also tended towards prog-rock in the '70's) Baris Manco (pronounced Baresh Mancho), born in 1943. Interestingly, his elder brother is named Savas!!!!

I had a plenty of friends named Baris during elementary and high school days, just because of the fact that Turkey invaded Cyprus in 1974, and named it "Cyprus Peace Operation"!!! (I am '75'er) Greeks may well have known about this operation. I don't know why it influenced the social life so much...

Anyway, coming back to the Steves, what do you think that influenced the naming trend so much, and more importantly, what caused all these Steves (with the exception of Hogarth and Walsh) to become great guitarists?!?!?

Moogtron III, I saw your thread and already responded! I am ahead of you with a couple of names (albeit cheating on Walsh and Hogarth!), and my thread started a slightly different way...

Yes, I like the way you built up the tension. If I would do it over...

Another name that's worth considering is John.  Here's a list of a number of bassists:

John Myung (Dream Theater)
John Jowitt (IQ/Arena)
John Deacon (Queen)
John McVie (Fleetwood Mac)
Jon Jeary (Threshold)
Johnny Lee Middleton (Savatage)

And you can add Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) and Steve Ramsey (Skyclad) to the Steve guitarist list.

I was pretty sure there was a big name missing from my list, but I couldn't think who it was.  Thanks for reminding me.

Two more additions: Steve Clark (Def Leppard) and John Patitucci

Me neither - that is, I don't get the point of this thread hence offering Steve Marriott and Stevie Nicks

Now it made sense...
If you still did not get it, look at MoogtronIII's second post above...
Who are Steve Marriott and Stevie Nicks anyway!?!?!?
