Being unemployed for months on end and living under the roof of a
mother with little cash to spare I simply can't afford CDs at the
moment. As a result I have a VERY sizable backlog of downloaded albums
I'm desperate to purchase.
For those of you who are worried about nasty software rather than the
dreaded secret police I heartily recommend you try Soulseek for size.

i used kazaa about 3 years ago but after they started issuing subpoenas, i stopped, though it was not because of the threat if subpoena, but rather my computer would get viruses like crazy. I used to burn cd's a lot, but not so much anymore. i believe that musicians will make up losses in burning and downloading when they tour. if not, at least more people get to hear their work.

Though I am now firmly against illegal downloading, burning etc. etc., I must admit I have downloaded a few albums in the past. I downloaded Thick As A Brick, Nursery Cryme and a couple others I can't think of at the moment.
But later I felt bad and then officially bought them all.
Now I don't download anything.

Illegal Downloading has saved music whether you like it or not. Let's
cry a tear because Lars Ulrich cant afford his gold plated hot tub,
britney spears can afford another ferrari. Boo-hoo, i wont lose any
sleep. Fact is more deserving bands are getting the recognition they
deserve, and rare music that would have otherwise dissapeared is
getting the praise they rightfully earned. Without file sharing i
wouldnt own half the cd's i do now.
BTW, its not illegal in canada.

But I think this animated Gif has contributed to the idea of some people that I was attacking anyone who has ever copied anything.

I agree, downloading is just an evolution of music distribution; it is progress. The biggest threat of it is for the music industry. Unknown, small bands will have faster recognition if people share the music. Respect for the artist and the will to keep the artists making music will become more important.
In my opinion in the future one would buy it's CD's (or downloads) directly at the website from his favorite artist.

Commercial music is all about control. Mega conglomerates like sony
control what music is heard and seen on say MTV (or V in my country).
Music stations don't set their own playlists, they are paid to play
what the music mogols want them to play. This equals control of the
charts. I personally have also always thought those trashy singles that
rush up the charts are being purchased by the companies that produce
them. This is a double whammy for the company- they gain tax benefits
from the expense and then reap the profits when the kids rush out to
buy this song cause it must be so good to jump straight in at no 10.
P2P takes away this control. People can choose what they want to listen
to and not have to worry about whether it is good or bad. Someone
mentioned earlier that this is good for the unsigned and small label
artists, and this is so, because what they are getting is advertisment
by word of mouth or word of Instant Messaging on a global level. Fame
brings with it, its own rewards.
The Mega conglomerates and their lapdog the RIAA, or whichever record
industry association it is in your country, are not worried about the
monetary losses - P2P is about a decade old now and still the same
companies post record profits each year - it is about losing the
control.

i do download everything before buying it...i don't feel good, and i know it the same as stealing the artists.....BUT
i live in brazil and most prog albums have to be imported, and thats kinda expensive
....so, as my money tree has died, i dont care downloading music, and i buy only what i like.

I usually get hard to find CDs from my local library and copy them to
my computer, but I almost never burn them to CD (except maybe a few
tracks onto a mix CD). I use them in my movies because I don't feel
like using the generic crap that comes with the editing software. I
once bought a burned copy of Master of Puppets at a thrift store for a
dollar, and my friend burned me a copy of Tull's Christmas album
because it's hard to find in my area.

Well, it's risky when you don't know whether or not an album will be good, so sometimes it helps to download a song or two from the album to make sure you'll like at least something about it.
I don't download, though, lousy internet.

I don't make any money from my films (at least the ones that I put
copyrighted music in). Mostly they're just made for fun and nobody sees
them but a few friends and some family members. I have made two for
local film festivals, but the first one didn't have any music and the
second used some bluegrass music my friend wrote.

No really, I usually share records with friends- id say about 20-30% of my cd's ae burned from friends- and I burn them CD's all the time- in hopes they like PROG music, so they will buy ones I dont have, so I can burn it from them!! you follow?-

I download any band that's new to me. If I like it I'll see if I
can buy the cd from the band so they get more of the money. If I
don't like it I'll dump it. P2p is a great way to try out bands
that you have never heard of before and would never hear if it were not
for downloading. I guess I'm just a born criiminal.
