I wouldn't agree with avant garde, but much of his solo work IS quite proggy. Orchestral stuff n' all.

I agree with you TP - but avant garde has never been a term I would use for Jon Lord's playing or compositional work, esp. Concerto......................

Prog purists say that Queen isn't prog and I agree with them (even though I like the music of Queen very much).
Like there are prog purists, there are also jazz purists and those people will even have a more hard time convincing people that something is jazz or not. And for jazz purists it will be a big disappointment that Brian Wilson has played on the Montreux Jazz festival, that's about the worst a jazz purist can take I think (don't get me wrong here, I love the music Brian Wilson made, but it's definitely not jazz).
To come back on the prog subject, we must be lucky we are not completely lost here. If Level 42 reaches the progarchives, then I will become desperate...

Two quotes from the collaborators thread are worth noting.
First, from geezer: "I would also like to say that I think it is a joke if some of the reviewers will review Queen albums with five stars or perhaps even four stars on a site called ProgArchives. After all, these ratings mean "essential masterpiece of progressive rock" and "excellent addition to any prog rock collection". Think about that. Of course, it would be totally acceptable for instance on a site called RockArchives."
Second, from Useful Idiot: "...Look at the biography we're using for them: "Queen is a British rock band which was popular during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s; even to this day they remain loved by millions. The group is well known for its sports anthems (although most were not written to be such) and classic rock radio staples, particularly the hits "We Are the Champions", "We Will Rock You", and "Bohemian Rhapsody"; the band promoted the latter, first released in 1975, with one of the earliest successful music videos, and later re-released it for the soundtrack album from the movie Wayne's World. And I am very displeased. I think listing Queen as prog is pretty
silly. Oh well. Can't say it matters that much. But
if you dilute the prog too much, what do you have left? Pretty
much everything that isn't straight up rock.

QUEEN IS A GREAT BAND BUT NOT PROG
THEY HAVE A VERY SYMPHONIC STYLE IN SONGS LIKE: BICYCLE, KILLER QUEEN IN MY OPINION THE ONE THAT MAS APPROACHES PROG STYLE IS "MUSTAPHA"

I don't like Queen, but they have some prog-rock elements:
a) Musics with lots of tempo changes
b) Amazing musicians
c) Their albums had a lot of diversity in terms of musical styles (at least in the 70's).
Obviously, they're not progressive all the time, but there's a plenty of bands who weren't too! If you don't like Queen too, do what I am doing: avoid the Queen section at progarchives!

I dont know if this has already been mentioned but I would like to see bands such as Uncle Moes Space Ranch, Tribal Tech and On the Virg.
As for queen, People should just get over it. As much as i cant stand them i can see why they are considered Prog and Innovative

Your opinion, but mine is different. I never said I was against non-virtuoso musicians, but those one (especially in the LAST albums, but also in the early one) don't have to be called AMAZING.
AMAZING, on this site, is neither John Deacon nor Roger Taylor. They are.. GOOD (if you want)
IMHO.
