I remember that Picture was a lot cheaper than other albums, I bought it for about £1.30 when all other albums were about £1.80 to £1.90. It was quite a big diference then.

I'm really glad they recorded a studio version as the live version now sounds a little dated! |

here's what im confused about. If PAAE predates their first album as somebody on here said...
why are the crowd going crazy? Surely ELP would have been unknown if they haven't released their first studio album yet? |

How can 'Pictures @ an exhibition' pre-date their debut.? ELP Debut was released in the UK in Dec 1970,the band had been playing the tracks ever since their debut concert @ the guild hall, plymouth Aug 23rd 1970. So how can 'Pictures' pre-date that, being Recorded on 26th march 1971 to be released Nov 1971 Duh! |

The crowd are also going crazy because these guys just came from 3 other successful bands... The Nice, King Crimson and Atomic Rooster. Afterall they were called the first "Super Group"... its not like were 3 unknown performers... most everyone in the UK knew those bands already... |

Pictures At An Exhitbition was to be given away as a bonus disc on Tarkus originally but then it surfaced as a bootleg and there was such demand for it that the record company decided to release it 'officially'. (I stand to be corrected though) It was the first album I ever puchased (£2 in 1976) as my pocket money just stretched far enough.

What is not reflected here is that Pictures was originally a UK and Europe release only (see the piece I lifted from www.emersonlakepalmer.com ) - and I'm trying hard to remember: did Island Records issued this a cheapo (but the gate fold sleeve on the LP I have suggests a full price record?). BTW it would be nice to see the original UK labels/catalogue no.s bands recorded, before breaking into N. America, listed in some of the biographies.
Quote: For the interim, the band wanted to release its live recording of Pictures At An Exhibition. However, the band's US label, Atlantic refused to release it. "The label told the band it was a piece of sh*t and would damage their careers," remembers manager, Stewart Young. "We felt otherwise, and had released it in Europe, where it was a huge hit. The British import started to filter to US shops and eventually sold 50,000 copies. The next thing I know the label is on the phone telling me they'd like to put the album out. I told them to go to hell. Three days later the President of the label flew to London to try to get us to change our mind. Eventually, we put the deal together and the album came out. Ultimately, it was a multi-platinum hit."
Unquote
There is another thread on Pictures started a few months ago, where I brought up Wendy Carlos's disappointment when she discovered that Emerson was preparing to release Pictures - she was planning to do the same. So I was amused last weekend digging through some of the underplayed CDs in my collection to find Mussorkski & Tomita's Pictures At An Exhibition, I had totally forgotten he had gone and done the same towards the end of the 70's!! A rather funny/peculiar interpretation to say the least |

Yes, I have a copy of the Tomita version also. It is quite interesting. Keith was playing parts of Pictures even when he was with the Nice. It was no surprise that it was a part of ELP's first setlist.

I've always considered Pictures a live piece not a studio piece. Kept down to the basic organ (and occasional synth), bass/guitar and standard drum kit for it's raw intensity. Showed Keith, Greg and Carl for who they really were. 3 very talented musicians making the most of what they had at the time. That joke of a studio rendition they did on the box set in '93 was just a telltale sign of desperation of not having anything new to offer then. As a big fan of theirs in the early 70s, it was a real big disappointment to see how they disintegrated after Surgery. Interesting bit about Tomita though, didn't even know anything about it. Good shot, you got me on that one!

Actually that studio version of Pictures that was recorded for the boxset.. was just bad timing. They went in to do that after being on the Black Moon tour for 10 months and another 6 months just touring their standards.. by the time they went in to record that, all of them were exhausted and Greg's voice was so strained. They did it because they wanted to see how it sounded with Keith's new toys and Greg's new production techniques.. unfortunately they could of timed it better. However, that being said.. the remastered recordings from that which were added as a bonus onto the end of their "In the Hot Seat" cd... sounds much better. |

I like the studio version of Pictures.Admittedly it doesn't have the dynamics of the original but I don't see it as a joke version.Greg Lake's deep baritone suits the old feel of the music perfectly and Emerson's sythns are impressive. The only dissappointing thing to me is the way the Hammond is mixed so low. |
