 Topic: Brian Wilson and Pet Sounds

I folks. I just found this site yesterday and was wondering what
you folks think about Brian Wilson and the album Pet Sounds. I
listen to a lot of the more popular progressive bands like Pink Floyd
and Jethro Tull, Celtic rock/punk like Paddy Goes To Holyhead and the
t**sers, and bands like The Beautiful South, but Pet Sounds has always
been my favorite album of all time. It sounds as fresh now as the
first time I heard it and I can see it's influence in many of the
better albums that have come since.
BTW, after downloading some of the sample mp3s here I think I may have
found a couple of new favorite bands in Porcupine Tree and
Renaissance. It sounds like they have put out some incredible
stuff that puts the popular music of today to shame. I think part
of my next paycheck will be going to buy new cds.

Welcome Don Frog to the forums.
I don't like Pet Sounds, find it highly boring, to much pop for my liking.
Renaissance is quite alright, love the voice of Annie Haslam, just recently purchased Sherezade and other short stories, great fun, don't know Porcupine Tree, but I'm planning on listening some of their material in the future.

Brian Wilson's newest album, SMiLE is VERY progressive and I highly
recommend it. Anyone who considers Sgt Peppers a founding father
of prog will welcome Smile.

Pet Sounds is an album that's still growing on me - I'm not keen on the flavour of the music, which means I don't listen to the album regularly.
Every time I do listen to it, however, there seem to be more details and surprises in the texture - and even though I don't like the music very much, I have to admire the quality of the songwriting and the inventiveness and workmanship.
I hope you discover even more great music on this site - let's face it, it's all quality stuff compared to the pop charts!

Both Pet Sounds and Smile are excellent! Great melodies, great sounds, but not for every progfan. Smile has more of a progrock-format than Pet Sounds, but I think both albums are very, very good!

Fantastic album.The period from Pet Sounds through to Surf's Up is amazing.
BTW.Dennis Wilson's solo album,Pacific Ocean Blue is well worth checking out.If you can find it.
This needs to be offcially released on cd NOW!

I bought Pet Sound purely due to the fact that the Beatles
name checked Brian Wilson so often and I have to say that during my younger
years I loved it to bits but as I got older, both the sound and the songs lost
their hold over me.
However in recent months I have been rediscovering this album and it's like
coming home to your mum's cooking. A very pleasing experience indeed.
My fave track of the Beach Boys however is still 'Sail On Sailor' from the Holland album.

Pet Sounds is far too syrupy for me. If thats the best they could do in
response to Revolver I am not sure why McCartney was even
worried....more genuine competition was coming from the Byrds I would
have said.

I'm a big fan of the Beach Boys - for me Brian Wilson at that point in his career was doing for pop what Zappa was doing for rock. I'd also nominate Sunflower as a superb album, not as 'progressive' as Pet Sounds or Smile but superbly melodic from start to finish with good contributions from all of the band.
And I agree with Man Erg - the world needs to rediscover Pacific Ocean Blue - that and a proper DVD of 2 Lane Blacktop would make me a happy camper indeed.

Before his meltdown Brian Wilson was brilliant. I'm always amused at how people brush aside the Beach Boys as "surf music".
Actually, the Beach Boys put out some stuff that borders on symphonic, intricate arrangements and fantastic harmonies. Just listen to "The warmth of the sun" or "God only knows" (McCartney said the latter was the greatest song he ever heard and the man has credentials).
Take into account that "Pet sounds" was the inspiration for the Beatles to do "Sgt.Peppers". I think that sums it up.

...and "Rubber Soul" was the inspriation for "Pet Sounds" (In the meantime, the Beatles released "Revolver"...).
That sums it up for me
