The band that leads this poll, The Mars Volta, is IMO horrible and not even worth mention.

Ture, but there's not a single genre of music who had their peak during the 70's that has been re-created (When's the last time your heard a Blues Rock band as good as Zeppelin
You really should try to open your mind a bit more. Yeah, TMV are a hard listen at times, but many of the other artists are making great music as well.

My mind is plenty open. I've given both De-Loused and Frances a few good listens after reading about how amaizng the albums were and I just didn't like the albums at all. |
Ok, my mistake.

There is no modern Prog Band destined to be considered a classic around at the moment. We are too divided on what constitutes "Prog Rock" to ever be in a position of assigning any group classic status. That would take a consensus of opinion that just doesnt exist.

Interesting thought. I think this list constitutes perhaps what we would like to see happen as individuals, but probably will never happen to any of the above named groups. After all who would have thought that "Nirvana" who led the "Grunge" charge are now considered "classic"? Indeed what is today's definition of "Classic" ?

Which is true of course, but Nirvana were always mainstream, these bands, excepting maybe TMV are not. There is no way that the majority of older Progsters are ever going to accept TMV as classic prog but the younger end might be in for a wonderful ride...

I honestly don't know. None of those bands really come close to the giants of old
Radiohead!

i would go for radiohead in light of the ok computer album which is fantastic, they are pretty close to prog rock leaders today, the only one out of the votable ones i would also consider are the flower kings, think we will hear more of them in the future. but radiohead gets my vote for sure

I voted Radiohead - but have just been giving Porcupine Tree's "In Absentia" another listen I might have to change my mind from that list given
Also I think GYBE is another contender though this group needs a wider listening audience, perhaps. I think that is another clue as to what makes a band "classic" - how well known or promoted they are.

OK, they are pretty derivitive, and Mars Volta may be the "future," but what I heard did nothing for me (beyond irritate me)....
Still, I won't write them off yet -- maybe I'll be more receptive to their charms in the future.
Oh -- Godspeed You Black Emperor really impressed me, and they are quite different, no?

IQ are from the 80's, that's already passed cause its the NEW MILLENIUM. I am tempted to pick out my favorite Progressive band, Dream Theater, but they are not really new, so I'm picking Pain of Salvation. The remaining Prog scene really needs a good fresh breath and Pain of Salvation is genius.
THE MARS VOLTA IS NOT THE FUTURE, HOW CAN GUYS FROM AN EMO BAND FORM A "CLASSIC" PROGRESSIVE BAND. They for me is an example of a Pseudo/semi- Progressive band sorta like Tool or Radiohead.

Talking about metal-prog bands, I think non english-speaking metal-prog bands such as MATRAZ (Chile) and A PIEDI NUDI (Italy) deserve more attention from the prog community. In fact, they don't sound like other metal-prog bands because their music is deeply rooted in fusion and symphonic prog, and they use the language of their country, which adds to the originality of these bands.

Well, I've actually heard A piedi Nui somewhere and I wasn't really happy with the sound. I really really love my POS, IMHO its just something that hasn't been heard in while since the IAW album.
