It's simply prog in the authentic vein of "Progressive" music...

I'm completely with you on this one - but how to categorise such a group of musicians?
I only have the one album 'raise your skinny fists....', but I was completely blown away by the dynamic in this double CD set - it seems to bridge the gap between modern 'classical' music & more traditional 'progressive' rock.
I, for one, would applaud the decision to include 'God Speed....' in the forum.

I guess the consensus is that they are a form of Progressive Rock then.
I've got two albums by them, Yanqui U.X.O. and Slow Riot and their packaging is as strange as they are. There certainly is something to be said about their music though.

Art rock..
I've got Yanqui U.X.O, levez vos skinny fists... , and slow riot for new zero kanada..
gonna order F#a# oo this month I think...
and I've already suggested godspeed more then a month ago on the "suggestions" forum

HI, THIS IS CÉSAR INCA.
Maybe, all in all, GYBE! defies labels... but I don't see them as an integral part of the so-called post-rock movement really... some music critics consider them as the most notable psot-rock act, but I think that GYBE!'s repertoire is way too infected with dissonant academy avant-garde, crimsonian fire and krautrock oppresive textures to fall under that category. Mogwai (they bore me) and Sigur Ros (I enjoy them) fit the label better, IMHO, but not the creators of 'Infinity', 'Lift' and 'UXO'.
Maybe the guys of GYBE! hate the label 'progressive', but truth is that their instrumental intense flights are closer to the dark side of the prog movement than most music critics are likely to accept.

Hello everyone. I'm BrainRock Ben and this is my first post at Progarchives.com. Newbie city (well, newbie to the forums anyway). I wrote the bio for the GYBE! entry and am glad to see that no one has yet to complain about them being here!
Anyway, as for sub-genre, I listed them as "art-rock" and "experiental" and "avant-garde" and "space-rock." Whoever actually adds them and their albums just put progressive rock.

I just spent a giddy and surreal 24 hours getting myself up to speed with GYBE- I have to say I'm now a convert. Thanks for exposing me to this amazing group!
On a slight tangent- anyone know the best online outlet for their CDs? I'd like to respect the band's beliefs by purchasing their music from a source not connected with multinational corporations.

I bought "Yanqui U.X.O" two days ago and I'm blown away. I had no big expectations but hey, the 9 guys really got me. I will buy their "raise your skinny fists..." as well, that's for sure.

and yes, they are prog to me, at least art rock but that's also a part of prog IMO...

GYBE is an amazing band, and I'm very glad they've been added. I'll have reviews of their catalogue coming up shortly.
