Favourite is Days Of Future Past, like all of them

Compilation album "This Is The Moody Blues" From 1974 is the best introduction to the band i think. It contains all their best material and really is a very best of on all accounts (not only their biggest hits, but also best album songs).

I hardly ever include them in a best off list, but the Moody's rank up there with the best of them

"In Search of the Lost Chord" - because of the psychedlic "Legend of a Mind" - love that track.

My favourite Moodies are in particular "TOCCC" "EGBDF" and "Seventh Sojourn" - I also like the 2 I did not vote for as well.

As an aside - The Moodies are currently touring New Zealand as I speak - but strangely enough are not playing in our largest city, Auckland (Where I live). I am one very sad person

They've really all got their pros and cons. "Days" is their best legacy to music history, but not a very good representation of the band themselves. "Lost Chord" is very consciously a psychedelic album and so still doesn't quite show the Moodys doing what they do best (kinda like PF's "Piper"...a great album, but a bit removed from the rest of their catalogue).

I'd probably drop "Seventh Sojourn" slightly below the others (at times showing the band a little tired out).

But I'm buggered if I can chose between the remaining four. Any are worthy.

Long Distance Voyager is an amazing album specially because it wasreleased when prog' was going downhill.

And Patrick Moraz plays with them.

I only have 3 Moodies albums, but from what I've heard I think that 'In Search of the Lost Chord' is the best. An excellent psychedelic album... sort of subtle, sort of not. Very excellent though...

HEY! I live in Auckland too! And am extremely upset that the Moodies aren't coming here. I still don't know why not...Deep Purple & Roxy Music did last year!

I own all of the Moody Blues, and out of the first 7, I think I would pick "A Question Of Balance." Perhaps it's quite an eccentric choice, but to me it symbolizes the cream of the early Moody Blues sound and vibe, and is a killer album as well.

 

And yes, Ivan, "Long Distance Voyager" is one heck of an album. It's a shame it's highly underrated, because it has excellent musicianship and great songwriting - a winning mixture for any album.

Hi Rob - it's beyond me - I am sure there are heaps of Moodie fans in Auckland who would love to see them play and no matter where they play. Lets hope they come back soon and tour Auckland the next time round

"To Our Children's Children's Children" is, IMHO, the best Moody Blues album ever. Despite it lacking an epic composition, as an album, the repertoire is integrated beautifully: also you'll find some aggressive mellotron layers here and there, plus 'Eternity Road', one of the best Thomas compositions ever, and the closure 'Watching and Waiting', whose mellotron/flute layers and cello counterpoints are spine-chilling.

For me 'In Search Of The Lost Chord' is their greatest work; has some of the most popular Moody Blues songs in 'Legend Of A Mind', 'Voices In The Sky' and 'Ride My Seesaw', plus wonderful tracks like 'Om' and 'The Actor'. However, all of these albums, especially the first 5, are prog meisterwerks.

I must say that few other groups' back catalogues are as easy to divide as the Moody Blues one; in my opinion, the only worthwhile music is the albums listed here from their 1967-72 period. Their 77-present work is barely progressive in my opinion and is very formulaic.

To Our Children's Children's Children is an awesome album by The  Moody Blues! My fave! The space themes, the strength of the songwriting all add to the best!
