Would anyone else apart from me classify Magnum as prog rock?


I think they were like Styx and Kansas, in that they fused progressive elements like multi structured songs, with pop hooks.


Anyone else feel they are due a place on this site?

i have 3 albums, and the best one is storyteller: the guitar is extremely razor and aggressive. however,  it is not very prog.

They certainly had the potential to be a good prog band, but they never really got there. Magnum made fine melodic rock, and albums like the excellent "Wings of heaven" did find them dabbling in prog on some tracks. I enjoy their music enormously, and would love to see them make the prog album they are capable of.

One of my favourite bands ... but I wouldn't classify them as prog. They're somewhere between early Hogarth-Marillion and Queen. "Melodic Rock" is the label I guess ...

I would agree with that sentiment and I would also like to say that Bob Catley is definitely one of the best rock vocalists - ever. He would leave many of the so called 'greats' in the dust!

IMHO "On a storyteller's night" is an excellent album and could be considered as prog rock (somewhere between art rock and hard rock)

Yes I do think they should be included here. Tracks like "Only a memory", "On a storyteller's night" or "Don't wake the lion" are pure prog. A great deal of their fan base used to like prog. I know that lots of material isn't really prog but If Asia is included than Magnum should too.

Lovely melodic proggish rock.But not a prog rock band per se!

Fantastic band. Tony Clarkin is so criminally underated as a songwriter. Just bought the expanded edition of 'Story Teller's Night'. 'Les Morts Dansant' is a rock song on the original demo!

I agree with the guys that say the exact genre is MELODIC ROCK, but they make it very personal, sometimes epic, sometimes bluesy or even jazzy...his vocalist is fantastic..though i dont like that much the other projects he has participated. Btw i have the same problem to rate a band like TOTO..they trully have prog or jazz intrumental moments...but i woundt ever consider prog...i dont think theres a genre that fits TOTO...;)

if you listen to storyteller, you will notice that the electric guitar quality sound on this album can easily be compared to judas priest (ram it down, screaming for vengeance & defenders of the faith)and headpins (turn it loud)!

it sounds a bit like FM cheesy hard rock band PHENOMENA, featuring cozy powell!!

Kingdom of Madness is definately PROG!

Just listen to the killer intro to "In The Beginning". If I remember correctly the album was recorded in 75' but wasn't released until 78'. In Prog terms that's a lifetime!

I definitely believe that the band would have been a whole lot more successful if they had released Kingdom of Madness earlier.

I certainly enjoy On A Storyteller's Night now and then (own it on LP), but I know very little about their other albums.

I own On a Storyteller's Night, which I wouldn't call my favourite album by any means. Bob Catley is indeed a great singer, but I find them ultimately a bit on the boring side. Prog? Not really, in my opinion, but definitely related. Therefore, I have no problem in seeing them there, even if their music is not exactly my cup of tea.
