I don't think any of these groups would be classed as 'Metal' as we know it now. Back in the 70s, they were known as 'Heavy Metal' groups and the same today are Classic RocK!!
On the basis of this poll I would have to vote Black Sabbath who were the pioneers of the metal sound.
Led Zep, Deep Purple and Uriah Heep for example (and imo)lent more towards progressive rock in many of their albums but not heavy enough to be metal - more like 'heavy rock'.
aargh it is all a matter of semantics as well as individual choice is it not???

the best polls seem to be topics asking what your favorite is, without the poll part

I voted for the Sabs, nearest to doing convincing prog, especially Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Sabotage, Technical Ecstacy and some of Never Say die. Music that builds on music.

Doom metal really. I can't really find many prog elements...

Depends what you're looking for. A lot of the Sabs seventies stuff was horizontally complex in the way there was three or maybe four little riff based songs within one longer song and many changes of pace and mood, listen to Killing Yourself To Live from Sabbath Bloody Sabbath for a good example. Quite a few synths featured on the later 70's ones as well.
I agree not strictly prog and more doom metal but appeals to me and I'm sure many other prog fans as well.

Great job! It's a good metal poll this time ! Of those listed, I most go with the immortal Led Zeppelin. Deep Purple and Black Sabbath come in to a close, but tied second place.

What do you mean by "metal" ? Metal as in "Heavy Metal" or "Nu Metal" ? The question should be clearer. Looking at the bands listed for the vote, I guess the term should be "Heavy Metal" ! Strange Iron Maiden isn't mentioned... Guess I'll vote 'others' then.

Nu-Metal is an odd term... there's no metal in there...

The only real metal bands in this poll would be Sabbath, Budgie and Scorpions, Montrose and Motorhead. The others did hard-rock.
Judas Priest was also around in those years. Sad Wings Of Destiny.
