James Labrie live.. well I agree, it's strained at times and a lot of
breathing going on there. It's a real pleasure to watch singers
who never miss a note live, a that's why I voted for Geoff Tate!

Don't get me wrong, I love a lot of Dream Theater, but Labrie's
vocals live are an embarrassment; yes, I have the live albums, and yes,
I've seen them a few times, too - the man couldn't carry a tune in a
bucket! |
I agree with all the LaBrie bashing. He really DOES suck. Sounds
awfully strained at the high notes, has that awful breathy stuff going
on in the ballads, haven't got the power for the metal tunes, and
sounds generally emotionless when he sings. AND he's almost always
about a quarter note too low when they play live. However, on
Octavarium I must applause him a bit, too. He doesn't try to get as
high as before, which gives a better overall impression, and he
suddenly has got FEELING, which makes even the ballads a worthwile
listening! He's still way behind Gildenlöw, though. That guy is for
metal singing what Virgil Donati is for metal drumming.

I voted 'Other': Mike Baker, Shadow Gallery...I'm amazed he's not in the list.

Devin Townsend- all the way- so surprised he does not have more votes- listen to "Terria"
Daniel Gildenlöw- no way- a bit overated- sounds too much like the dude from Faith no More- i mean- he's good- but not THAT good

I dunno. Sometimes MJK's voice sounds really cool, like in the soft, Arabesque parts of Lateralus, but I'm not always a fan of his when he starts screaming like in "Ticks and Leeches". For whatever reason, I honestly prefer LaBrie.
Though as I've probably stated already, Russell Allen is probably the "best of genre", with Mikael Akerfeldt close on his heels.

MJK.
by far. the least annoying prog-metal vocals of all. a smooth and pleasant voice plus amazing artistic composition, lyrics and technical ability.
beats the pants off laBrie any day.

...and to add to the argument/discussion I could have sworn I was listening to the voice of Matthew Bellamy from Muse when listening to DT's latest "Octavarian" - any one care to comment on how close James la Brie's voice is sounding like the great vibrato Matthew Bellamy???

I think Russel Allen is the best of the singers listed. He has great range and many different styles- he's pretty unique. But Crimson Prince had it right:

I said
MJK from tool because they are my #1 favorite band but Mikael from
opeth in a close second. he is so versatile with melodic singing
and death metal growls.

For some reason I love Tecchio's vocals. I can't think of a single good thing about them, but his chaotic, wild screeching (he is the one on Control and Resistance, yes?) really appeals to me. I don't think it would if he were in a different band and singing in a similar style though. That said, if it's him that sings for Hades I like that too... However my vote goes to Mr. Gildenlöw. Utterly fantastic.
