I miss a lot of artists within this great website. Before I name some, I would like to make an attempt to define the term 'progressive rock'. 1. 'progressive' means something new, revelationary, unique, original, heuristic, inspirative and so on. 2. 'rock' is a branch of music developed in the 20th century composed and played by a small cluster of clever musicians using modern instruments such as electric guitars and so. 3. conclusion: 'Progressive rock' is a new, revelationary, unique, original, heuristic, inspirative branch of music developed in the 20th century composed and played by a small cluster of clever musicians using modern instruments such as electric guitars and so. It is clear that to do that, those musicians must be very talented and brave. It is not easy. It is easier to make always the same product round around, but then you get nothing but 'rock cola'. The most artists involved here in this site deserve to be named progressive, but still a plethora is missing here. I now mention only some, most famous, nevertheless, I am sure a lot of them are hidden and not known, and it is upto us to make them famous also by virtue of this site. Do some names occur also to you in addition to the following?

Beatles, Deep Purple, Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, Kitaro, JMJarre, Vangelis, Chick Corea, Whether Report ...

Since no further suggestion I will addsome:

Dire Straits (telegraph road, privateinvestigation)

Police, Sting

from jazz definitely Larry Corryel

Then I remember some groups from 80s like Waterboys, Big country. I have never heard of them later.

Still, there is a lot of progressive music which is not here.

If progressive meant something new, revelationary, unique, original, heuristic, inspirative, than what couldn't be put on Progarchives? Read the PROG ROCK? section of the website...
"Mister Fripp, your music is quite different than everything else out there. In one word, how would you describe it?"

"Progressive.... yeah, that's it..."

thats only YOUR definition of prog. It is nobody elses.

i see prog as:

long compostions with shifting time sigs and/or different movements and/or different instrument passages.

One thing i heavily disagree with is that prog rock has to have intricate and themed lyrics. this is not true at all, anyone could write similar lyrics to genesis or yes, it dont make em prog! prog is all about music structure not lyrical content.

I agree completely, I just wanted to point that a lot of artist who are involved here do not fit perfectly to the definition, eg. solo Peter Gabriel albums or Supertramp (I love them both); and on the other hand a lot of bands are still missing. By instance, Abbey road is extremely progressive even according to the official definition of prog, or Kate Bush's album Hounds of love or others (I love them too).

By the way, does anybody have any idea of the above mentioned groups Waterboys and Big country?

I think Gabriel's too relevant to the scene in general (for obvious reasons) to miss out. I have no idea what the bands you mention sound like though.

These threads are intensely irritating. Why not just listen to the music you like and stop worrying about whether it has an arbitrary label attached to it?

It seems to me a lot of people have the attitude 'I like this, it must be prog' or the other way around. The solution to your problems: Make your own damn site and include whatever you want.

Honestly, who would listen to Sting and think of progressive rock?!

uuuh, i do not consider that I like be prog. Then, Mozart, Bach, Beethoven should be here too. And as well I do not take the prog as a garantee of quality. I just wanted to mention some names, that is all.

best wishes
