Yes's version of America is a classic if you ask me.

Probably the worst cover I know of. They butchered it!! It was so beautiful and elegant, and then they tore it to pieces in a sheer exercise of style over substance. I think Tales from Topographic Oceans was beautiful, and I've always wished that the punks had pointed at that abomination instead.

I'm sorry for being a nut, I completely agree with all your other choices, but that one... *gags*

Shocked^ Fussy Prude! Wink

I like em both, but the Yes cover RAWKS!Cool

Big smileFer chrissake, have a beer & crank it! -- don't yank it....

You put a lot of work into the color scheme and design of your posts, don't you? *thinks that's neat*

ConfusedNeat? Naw -- probably just a brain disorder....Wacko

Er, of course I meant "don't yank it," as in "don't yank it off the CD player...." Wink

  1. Blinded by the Light by Manfred Mann is superior to Spribsteen's original.
  2. America by Yes rocks in comparison with the IMO boring original by Simon and Garfunkel (Agree with Peter and Cygnus)
  3. The House of the Rising Sun by BTO is the best cover of this traditional song resurrected by The Animals (Not bad version either).

Andy how can we ever forget their storming version of Fleetwood Mac's 'Green Manalishi'...?

[QUOTE=Alucard]

Robert Wyatt did some great covers :

I'm a believer, memories of old days, round about midnight (this one is really haunting)

and Elvis Costello did a great RW cover Shipbuilding

QUOTE]

Oops , Shipbuilding is a Costello song, but the RW version came out earlier so it is not really a cover.

You learn something every day - I always assumed Shipbuilding was a Wyatt song.

Before I forget - one of my favorite cover versions of all time has to be Frank Marino's take on "Purple Haze" on the 1978 "Mahogany Rush Live" album.

"...for all of you er, who dug this before, long time ago, and for those of you er, who wanna dig it now - Jimi Hendrix..."

Blue Cheer were the original Spinal Tap - or, possibly more accurately, Disaster Area. Was that a great psycho drum beat, or could the guy simply not play in time?

Who cares?

It's classic

But the Blue Cheer version sounds so damn lousy! I can't get past the poor sound of it.

That's the secret to it - don't listen to the production, listen to the MUSIC, man!!!

Pure heart and soul - and a few bad acid trips...

I'd also like to add Van Halen's "Dancing in the Streets" and Mick Jagger & David Bowie's, er, "Dancing in the Streets".

Dave Lee Roth did "interesting" covers of "California Girls", "Tobacco Road", "That's Life" and "Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody". Great party tunes.

Also a NWOBHM corker - Gillan's "New Orleans".

While I'm on a roll... AC/DC did a great cover of "Baby Please Don't Go", on the original Australian release of "High Voltage" and also "Schooldays", on the Aussie-only "TNT".

The Damned did a corking cover of "Alone Again Or", and a not so corking cover of "White Rabbit". I like the Sex Pistols' cover of "C'mon Everybody", even if no-one else does.

Raven (NWOBHM again!) covered "Hellraiser" on the "Wiped Out" album, and "Born to be Wild" on the b-side of a 12" - but Riot did the latter much better on the album "Narita".

And what about Chris Farlowe's covers of "Handbags and Gladrags" (makes the Stereophonics version sound even lamer) and "Paint it Black"?

The Red Hot Chilli Peppers did amazing versions of "Little Wing" and "Higher Ground"...

Finally (for now...), the brilliant cover of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" by Slayer.

/edit:

Stevie Ray Vaughan's cover of Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) - the best cover version of ALL TIME.

You must mean Transatlantic.

But how about Dread Zeppelins cover of Stairway to Heaven. It's far better than the original! Some might consider this as some kind of blasphemy or something.....

Agree on LSD, from Elton John (featuring Lohn Lennon on guitar btw)

Also Tommy from Elton John is better than the Who's original, not to metion I Saw Here Standing There (beatles cover, again with John Lennon)

Elton Rules and don't yáll forget it

I LOVE DZ -- Heartbreaker/Heartbreak Hotel, & Bring It On Home are especial faves.

LOLHilarious, and they ROCK -- great, semi-unique band: Elvis (impersonator) fronts a reggae band doing Zeppelin. Classic! Fun!Thumbs UpCool

Here's a funny title (don't know which band): Hairway to Steven

Hey Ivan, have you heard the version of "House of the rising sun" by Frijid Pink? It was absolutely stunning.

Not forgetting the Australian album some years ago which consisted entirely of cover versions of Stairway to Heaven. Over 20 in all, including one by Rolf Harris. Harris admitted he's never actually heard the song when he recorded his version, he just read the sheet music.

Frijid pink's version was awesome Bob, but my two favourites are Fish's cover of  Alex Harvey's 'Faithealer' from 'Raingods' and Todd Rundgren's 'While my guitar gently weeps'

Has anyone heard William Shatner's version of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds"?

Legendary!

He also murdered "Mr Tambourine Man" and "Common People" (Pulp).

What a voice!

I have an album that has these iconic tracks upon it along with some stuff my Leonard Nimoy.

If I may wander slightly off topic for a moment; the songs 'Bilbo Baggins' and 'Highly Illogical'  by Nimoy have to be heard to be believed.
