Probably the worst cover I know of. They butchered it!! It was so beautiful and elegant, and then they tore it to pieces in a sheer exercise of style over substance. I think Tales from Topographic Oceans was beautiful, and I've always wished that the punks had pointed at that abomination instead.

- Blinded by the Light by Manfred Mann is superior to Spribsteen's original.
- America by Yes rocks in comparison with the IMO boring original by Simon and Garfunkel (Agree with Peter and Cygnus)
- The House of the Rising Sun by BTO is the best cover of this traditional song resurrected by The Animals (Not bad version either).

I'd also like to add Van Halen's "Dancing in the Streets" and Mick Jagger & David Bowie's, er, "Dancing in the Streets".
Dave Lee Roth did "interesting" covers of "California Girls", "Tobacco Road", "That's Life" and "Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody". Great party tunes.
Also a NWOBHM corker - Gillan's "New Orleans".
While I'm on a roll... AC/DC did a great cover of "Baby Please Don't Go", on the original Australian release of "High Voltage" and also "Schooldays", on the Aussie-only "TNT".
The Damned did a corking cover of "Alone Again Or", and a not so corking cover of "White Rabbit". I like the Sex Pistols' cover of "C'mon Everybody", even if no-one else does.
Raven (NWOBHM again!) covered "Hellraiser" on the "Wiped Out" album, and "Born to be Wild" on the b-side of a 12" - but Riot did the latter much better on the album "Narita".
And what about Chris Farlowe's covers of "Handbags and Gladrags" (makes the Stereophonics version sound even lamer) and "Paint it Black"?
The Red Hot Chilli Peppers did amazing versions of "Little Wing" and "Higher Ground"...
Finally (for now...), the brilliant cover of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" by Slayer.

Stevie Ray Vaughan's cover of Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) - the best cover version of ALL TIME.

JOE COCKERS VERSION OF A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FREINDS WAS IMHO BY FAR THE BETTER VERSION!!!
WHEN I WAS A KID I THOUGHT ELTON JOHNS VERSION OF LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS WAS HIS SONG, I WAS NOT AWARE OF THE ORIGINAL VERSION(I STILL THINK ELTON JOHNS VERSION WAS A LITTLE BETTER!!!)

Agree on LSD, from Elton John (featuring Lohn Lennon on guitar btw)
Also Tommy from Elton John is better than the Who's original, not to metion I Saw Here Standing There (beatles cover, again with John Lennon)

 Hilarious, and they ROCK -- great, semi-unique band: Elvis (impersonator) fronts a reggae band doing Zeppelin. Classic! Fun!

Not forgetting the Australian album some years ago which consisted entirely of cover versions of Stairway to Heaven. Over 20 in all, including one by Rolf Harris. Harris admitted he's never actually heard the song when he recorded his version, he just read the sheet music.

I have an album that has these iconic tracks upon it along with some stuff my Leonard Nimoy.
If I may wander slightly off topic for a moment; the songs 'Bilbo
Baggins' and 'Highly Illogical' by Nimoy have to be heard to be
believed.
