my favorite 5 marillion songs are:

Cover My Eyes

Gazpacho

Don't Hurt Yourself

Script For A Jesters Tear

Forgotten Sons

but if I were to make a compilation I'd add, Warm Wet Circles, Hard as Love, Fantastic Place, Man of a Thousand Faces, Beautiful, Childhood's End and You're Gone.

Marillion fans is that a good compilation, or can it be improved?

I love both marillion eras, its hard for me to compare and decide which I like more. They have so many great songs from both eras, I think I have more single songs I like from Hogarths era but the albums as a whole are better with Fish

I still haven't come round to Hogarth's voice or lyrics - and I guess that after nearly 20 years, I probably won't. "Clutching at Straws" seems weak to me, compared with the first 3 albums - hence all my faves are;

1) Forgotten Sons

2) Script for a Jester's Tear

3) Fugazi

4) The Web

5) Grendel

6) Jigsaw

7) Garden Party

8) Side B of Misplaced Childhood *

9) Side A of Misplaced Childhood *

10) Chelsea Monday, Punch and Judy, Assassing, He Knows, You Know, Three Boats Down From the Candy, Market Square Heroes, Emerald Lies, Cinderalla Search, She Chameleon, Incubus, Charting the Single.

* Although I cheated with 10, when Marillion first performed the material from "Misplaced Childhood", Fish always announced that the new album was going to be a concept album with two tracks; one called Side A and the other called Side B...

There's a BBC Transcription disc of a radio concert with Fish making that exact announcement if you don't believe me...

  • Incubus
  • Fugazi

From "Misplaced childhood":

  • Bitter suite
  • Childhoods end

From "Clutching at straws":

  • Warm wet circles (Preferably the first 3 tracks in a row)
  • White Russian
  • Slaìnté Mhath

From "Seasons end":

  • Easter
  • The space

From "Holidays in eden":

  • Splintering heart

From "Brave":

  • The great escape

From "Afraid of sunlight":

  • King

From "This strange engine":

  • This strange engine

  • Three minute boy

From "marillion.com":

  • Interior Lulu

Would probably be a double or triple disc though.

All the best,
Per

Good question.

I've recently rediscovered the delights of Clutching At Straws which I thought was a but crap at the time. Warm Wet Circles is a cracker to be sure.

Still a big fan of Garden Party and Charting The Single.

Of the Hogarth era I guess that The Party is a fine track as is Man Of A Thousand Faces.

In this case, listen to Brave, great album if you like Hogarth-style Marillion

Of course all Fish-era albums are a must have for all proggers.

the downloads from this site are a reasonable start.
