The poll should really include Martin Lopez from opeth and danny carey from tool  (my two favorite drummers!) cause they are both classified as prog metal on this site.

Portnoy is just ridiculuos! He's the best in my opinion not just because he's fast with complex polyrhythms, etc. But he is musical encyclopedia, that guy plays off the bass, guitar, keys, even vocals... he hardly ever repeats drum parts and is always adding some creative flavor that no one else could ever think of. Just listen to "The Dance of Eternity" - what a monster! If a had to choose a second, I'd say Scott Rockenfield... his performance on Operation: Mindcrime is excellent.

since Fantomas is considered progmetal, I would definitely say Dave Lombardo.  Actually, I'm going to risk sounding a bit ignorant and say he's the best drummer

I think Neil Peart should be on here. Even though Rush overall isn't prog metal (or close to it), they invented the genre with 2112.

Paul Craddick from Enchant. His drumming on "A Blueprint Of The World" is just amazing. And I used to like Mike Portnoy's style before "Train Of Thought"

ZONDERīS STYLE IS MORE VARIED AND FLEXIBLE

PORTNOY TENDS TO BE MORE IMPRESSIVE JUST FOR THE IMPRESSION

I VOTE FOR MARK.

Well, since Arcturus is on this page, I would have to say Hellhammer (Jan Axel von Blomberg). Not because other are worse, but he could easily be the best.

I chose Portnoy ... mainly for his amazing efforts for Transatlantic and Neal Morse.

I'd have to go in this order:

Danny Carey (he really should be up here!)
Portnoy
Rockenfield (no, he doesn't have blistering chops, but he's got _great feel_

FEEL, people!

yeah!
And, better still is Virgil Donati. He's GOD.
Bobby Jarzombek and the other guys guesting on Spastic Ink's "Ink Compatible" are there as well...
I'm not that impressed by Portnoy's technical skills, obviously, but I like his playing style outside Dream Theater (just as I like all DT members better when they're into their side projects..)
