Topic: Truth or dare, you illegal downloader Posted: July 26 2005 at 15:34 |
Of almost every album of every artists you can illegal download something nowadays. Or get copies through friend or other. Before going further let me say that I am against illegal downloading. I think websites like this one, is the right answer against illegal downloads and protect the artists. Progmusic is not something you hear on the radio, but this website with its mp3 files can give you an idea of the different music if you like it.
Who has the guts to admit he has downloaded or copied something illegally, but feels guilty and thinks he should buy the album, since he likes the album soo much? And what artist?
Who has the guts to admit he has downloaded or copied something illegally, but feels relieved since the music is so bad, that it would have been a waste of money buying the album? And what artist?

I copy stuff all the time from friends and out of the radio station stacks. most of the time I dont feel bad about it. those rock stars already have lots of money, they dont need my measley 15 bucks. I do buy a lot of CDs though, but usually from smaller bands that no one else would have.
As for something I downloaded and feel bad about, I feel like I should buy the Mastodon album because the tracks I downloaded are fabulous, but are slightly lesser quality than I would get on the CD.
As for something I was glad I copied instead of buying, definitely the Velvet Revolver album (i know its not prog, but it really really sucked). I deleted it entirely after one listen. it was awful.

Two of my friends and myself have a communal album collection, so ill often copy some of thier albums and let them copy mine. But I will buy those albums when the three of us part ways.

I bought LDF's Forse Le Lucciole Non Si Amano Piu within 2 weeks of downloading the whole album ... and my CD didn't even have the bonus track New York (which the downloaded version did!)
As for the truly awful one that I'm glad I head before buying (and now never will buy) ... it's Can's Tago Mago ...
I really do intend to buy all the good ones ... I've got more than 3000 originals already ...

You got a lot of nerve, noob,to come onto this forum and try to call people out like that and act like you are above it all.You might not download anything via P2P but do you mean to tell me you can honestly say someone hasn't loaned you a cd and you haven't burned a copy of it or anything at all like that?

I have downloaded..........
But not in ages, its to dodgy - not coz of the secret police but just the hassle from popups and spyware and virus'
But when I did it was music i did want to check out before i bought it
like the strokes, franz ferdinand, or if I only wanted the odd song
from a band, if i only liked that one song
most the time these days i just randomly go into record stores look around for whatever seems intersting and cheap
|
I asked Bobby Dylan
I asked the Beatles
I asked Timothy Leary
But he couldn't help me either
They call me the seeker

I don't know about Canada, but in Germany the stores don't offer too many prog albums anymore ... or indeed any type of music that isn't mainstream.

I had some thoughts about this "buying vs. eMule" thing.
If I get interested of some vintage band, and buy their LP's from the second hand stores, the band still gets nothing! Only the merchant and the taxman get's some cash, no?

If you buy it in a second hand store, you get much more than what you can download in eMule. You get better sound quality, and something you can put in your shelf ...

^ Sure, that's why I do it. I'm very much into vinyls!
But what I tried to contemplate is, that often "illegal downloading" is attacked with an argument, that the musicians, I mean the record companies don't get the money from their releases. But they don't get it when I go shopping to the local second hand LP store, and that is my primary method of getting music.

I feel uneasy about downloading illegally or even accepting copied CD (it tarnishes my record collection). However, if I have downloaded in the past and liked what I've heard, I've always gone out and bought the record. I'm sure a lot of people are the same; there is nothing like owning the record and being able to flick through the inlay.
Having said all that, there are times when I've had copied CDs and hated the album. I was tempted to buy the record, then a friend copied me the CD. It made me glad I didn't head out and buy it.

Footnote found in Encyclopeadia Galactica-
P2P became such a problem for the multinational recording companies
during the beginning of the 21st century that they ceased to trade in
music altogether. Pop music disappeared from the culture, which led to
a new breed of artist who felt the need to create and compose music,
much as artists have done through history. The explosion of world wide
hyper-concious links was used to distribute these directly to the end
user. This form of music sounded remarkably similar to a form of music
termed progressive rock in the twentieth century.

Great to read all these emotions. The reason for this topic was to see how people, who like prog and are IMO respecting most of the times the artist more than for example the people who like some boyband, would react. It is a difficult subject and the respect for the artists sometimes fights with the ease to get a copy.

In fact Robin Hood did the same and he was considered to be a hero.

No, I am not. It is funny to read your first thought. The RIAA apparently has done a good job, creating fear with the millions of people having copies or downloads. The channce to get hit by a car is probably more than 100 times higher then to get a subpoena from the RIAA.
You're quit wrong, The Protologist. I am not above it all and I do not trust anyone stating he has never received a copy or downloaded something. In fact I have recieved copies from Spock's Beard's Snow, of which I am glad I did recieve a copy, because the music did not impress me at all and the CD would probably me somewhere hidden in my closet. On the other hand I have downloaded songs from The Mars Volta, as a tip from a friend, which I like very much and for which I feel somewaht guilty. Secondly I received a copy of Dream Theaters SFAM, when I did not know DT yet. Although I feel I should buy the album I still have and listened to this copy. Sadly the last time I saw the album my curiosity for Octavarium won.
At the end everybody knows its own situation.

I always buy albums either independently released or released/distributed through small independent labels,
I never buy cds from big labels like sony, time warner, etc...it is NOT in my biggest interest to give them money, just goes against my ethic, and I don't feel guilty about downloading this stuff.

For me, its really all about listening to as much music as possible, so whatever way I can get it I will. If I happen to be in a CD store and see one I want, I buy it. If I download a few tracks, that works too. though lately the widest expansion in my collection has been through cheap used vinyl, which I can usually get for $1 to $3 each. the artists dont get a dime of that money, so what's the difference?

I usually download some songs from a albums I haven't heard, and if i like them, I'll buy the album. If not, I'll delete the songs.
