Since I made all my previous posts, I have got the You album and Invisible Egg. You is a great album and a definite influence for Ozric Tentacles. I'm not keen on Gong though as their music is not consistent. Sometimes it's good and sometimes it's just plain whacky.

I've downloaded the Hidria Spacefolk material and it is excellent. One other recommendation I would make is ProgArchives own Cyanide Cyndee. She plays violin-based spacy music. Definitely worth checking out for any Ozrics fans.

I think that You could be a direct influence on OT, but OT sounds a bit rawer and heavier, but the spacey aspects are all there.

Earlier Gong is probably too "wacky" for you and later Gong too much like jazz fusion, but that one album is basically the root of the Ozric Tentacles sound.

 

I ABSOLUTELY agree with this post.  It couldn't be more true.  Also, the first Hillage album, 'Fish Rising' has some similarity to Ozrics but not as directly as 'You'.

You could try the disk "Space Groove" by Projekct Two (1/2 of King Crimson's "Double Trio"). Especially Disk 1, it's sort of a live jam in the studio.
If it's worth playing, it's worth playing loud!

As already mentioned....try out:

But also the group called : QUINTESSENCE......there are several albums

(check out PA for titles)....they are spacey and with ethnic influences...

..mind you, similar to Ozric´s are not the same as precisely....for the Ozric´s

have a unique sound!  Oh...and do get their "Live at pongmasters ball" dvd

great stuff for any Ozric fan!!!!

Absolutely wrong assumption. I am a HUGE Ozric Tentacles fan and at the same time I literally can't stand Djam Karet... Yes they are also a jam band, but their timing is sloppy, playing - uninspired (at least to my ears that is!) and compositions - quite boring and aimless. Don't waste your money on this "band", that is my suggestion. Though one more or less good DK album is "Devouring", so if you feel VERY curious start with this one.

I second Hidria Spacefolk, they are great, though almost like a copy of OT...

If you don't mind the absence of psychedelic jam-guitars in your space-ethno-trans, check out Bluetech, Shulman, Entheogenic and Shpongle. They are electronic projects that sound very spacey & transey and actually quite close to OT as well, albeit without (electric) guitars.

Also if you are not a prog-snob then try Afrocelts (formerly Afro Celts Sound System) and Deep Forest (Music Detected is a recommended album, it has awesome sound design!). These bands do it with vocals (and can be quite poppy at times and "new-agey") but they have their share of "ozricness" in the arrangements and always provide a great listen, especially in headphones.

I did look for Djam Karet in the shop but they didn't have it. I've seen them on www.amazon.co.uk though.

Ozric Tentacles are special because they don't sing. If you want bands with vocalists then there are loads to choose from. Thankfully, there is at least one band that doesn't feel the need to spoil their music by singing.

I went to my favourite CD shop last Friday and amazingly found exactly what I was looking for:

Gong - You

Amon Duul - Die Loesung

Steve Hillage - Live Herald

I can definitely hear the influence that Steve Hillage's guitar playing had on the Ozrics. As TrouserPress said, Gong have changed a lot throughout their time. In the beginning, they were wacky and later on become Jazz fusion. It was just this time of the Radio Gnome trilogy with Steve Hillage that they had the psychedelic sound that influenced Ozric Tentacles.

The track "Master Builder" from the You album was played by the Ozrics on Live Ethereal Cereal with the title Aumriff. It's nice to hear the original Master Builder which uses a sax whereas the Ozrics don't use a sax.

Of the myriad bands already suggested, please allow me to reiterate those who suggested Korai Orom and Ship of Fools (35007 is fantastic but has more heavy rock influence). Mandragora was from the same scene and is worth checking out (Temple Ball is the album). I would also throw in the Russian band Ole Lukkoye into the mix (the Doo Doo Doo album is good). Similar to Korai Orom in that it's an ethnic take on the general Ozrics sound.

While I'm hesitant to suggest one more band, due to your indifference to Gong, I will also recommend the early work of Kraan, especially the first live album. A little in the jazz fusion direction, the playing is fantastic, especially the bass work. Good mix of trippy and groovy.

Lastly, if you're a Hawkwind fan, two bands I'd throw your way include the Pink Fairies (proto punk space psych) and Chrome (industrialized Hawkwind).
