I dunno, I've been listening to them a lot lately and I think they are an awesome band- probably one of the most underrated bands around. What do you think? |

I bought one of theirs, it was very grungy and depressing. I gave it away, i think the fella tried killing himself shortly after. Can't recall the name of the album but boy was it hard work.

Been a fan of King's X since 'Gretchen' came out. 'Dogman' is probably my favorite, though. Wasn't too pleased with 'Mr. Bulbous.'
Ty Tabor always covered his rig at shows so no other guitar fiends would steal his sound

Must have been Dogman ... normally their albums are not at all depressing, more like uplifting. I agree with TheProgtologist, Gretchen Goes To Nebraska is their classic album, closely followed by Faith Hope Love. |

Over My Head from Gretchen Goes To Nebraska, gives me a rare feeling of elation every time I here it. Sounds like you picked the wrong album. |

A band that i used to listen years ago. Nowadays it wouldn't even come to my mind to listen their albums.

Yes, that was it, Dogman. I'm sorry fellas i tried. I gave it the requisite 6 plays before deciding and it was weird i just could not face it anymore it left me feeling down and that's not me at all, the whole album sounded like a grey sludge or would have if grey sludge had a sound but you get the drift. I probably did pick up the wrong album but i would not buy another i'd have to listen first. |

Once bitten .... a very wise decision you've made - see if your local record store have it and ask for that track to be played. Or is this a help: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000002IOG/qid%3D11 22386104/202-0064998-4346254 |

I must say I was confused when you said depressing, with songs like "It's Love" and "The Fine Art of Friendship" they're about as far away from that as you can get! I haven't heard of Dogman though. The latest album sounded bloody awful when I listened though (or is that Dogman?)

By latest album, you probably mean Black Like Sunday. And yes, Dogman is very heavy compared to most of their other work. The self-titled album is my favorite. |

Wow, I'm away for a while, and miss the biggest discussion of one of my all-time fave bands! To me, everything they released between the debut and Ear Candy is just about untouchable as far as quality. Dogman was their "grunge" album, released right at the height of bands like Soundgarden and Alice In Chains, and it shows. A great album (IMO) but quite unlike their others. The last few have not been nearly as good, especially the latest, Black Like Sunday. To be fair, BLS was a "special project" in that all the songs are songs they wrote in their very early years (when they were known as Sneak Preview, I think), and it is 80's poppy drek for the most part, with some of the most banal lyrics every written. Supposedly, the next album, according to bassist/singer Doug Pinnick, will be more like the older stuff than anything they've released in a long time. He even termed it a cross between Dogman and Gretchen.

I've just got the Best Of ... with this track listing 1. King At the risk of offending just about everybody who's posted so far ... I must say that I've been looking at this thread with constant disbelief ... These guys seemed to be like a pleasant grungy, limited hybrid of Rush and Soundgarden ... very talented musicians no doubt, but I'm not thrilled by the songwriting Not in my Top 500 bands, I think ... I'm just wondering if its because the Best Of features just a certain kind of song ... surely if I've gone through 17 tracks like these and am not impressed, I should stop ... or is there a proggy masterpiece that isn't reflected in the tracks here? |

I agree with you Trotsky. This band is really average at best. I think they are decent for a non-progressive band.
Even this "Best Of" has only a few decent tracks (mostly the earlier tracks). Songs like Summerland, Pleiades and Mr.Wilson are not totally bad... |

You guys should listen to Gretchen Goes to Nebraska ... not just one or two songs, but the entire album. That's the only way to find out why we like them so much. BTW: I wouldn't call them Prog, it's more like an unique form of Melodic Rock with unusual twists and turns. Edited by MikeEnRegalia |

So you don't like them, I don't have any problem with that - I was only trying to say that those who judge them by the Best of album and have not heard Gretchen should listen to that album before deciding that they really don't like them. Unless they have a general problem with the King's X sound - then they don't need to bother, because their general approach is basically the same on each album. |

Yes, I agree. Like I said earlier this is a band that i used to listen some years ago. It is not really that I have a problem with King's X, it is more like that i have a problem with anything that is not progressive. If it's not progressive it bores me to death. |
