I was shocked to discover that Geddy Lee is in fact a great big Gary!
Yes, the Rush bassist and singer's real name is Gary. It's up there with Marilyn Manson's real name of Brian and Peter Gabriel's real name of Hillary.
It got me thinking. How many other prog musicians have changed their name and what is their former name?

Peter Gabriel's full name is actually Peter Brian Gabriel, and Steve Hacket's is Stephen Richard Hackett. Phil Collins full name is Phillip David Charles Collins

His name is Zivojinovich (may have mis-spelled that). According to an interview with him (from the CD "An Interview With Kings"), it translates literally into "Life son". Polish if I'm not mistaken.

Where have you been?
Anyway, Geddy has never "changed" his name. "Geddy" is actually "Gary," as it was pronounced by his grandmother. Imagine a thick Yiddish accent. Geddy's surname is Weinrib, which he doesn't use professionally, while Lee is his middle name.
Marilyn Manson's real name is Brian Warner, and the only reason I know this bit of trivia about that two-bit poser is because of an article I read in which MM made a huge deal about the public knowing his birth name. I could care less what the fool calls himself, though "P. Hallus" would probably a fitting pseudonym.

I always thought the Geddy was short for Giddeon.
Lifeson is of Yougoslav origin, if I remember well an old thread (i also thought he was polish). Geddy Lee is of polish origin.
