    Posted: May 12 2004 at 15:41

I have a cassette of a compilation released in the UK in 1993 entitled 'Progression:  An Anthology of Progressive Rock'.  It was released on Vertigo/Polygram.

I have just found this tape but I have lost the inlay card.  I can identify most of the tracks but would be grateful if someone could identify the instrumental track which comes immediately before Hawkwind's 'Silver Machine'.

Can anyone help?

Cheers

KH

Welcome to the forum KH!Smile

I found the album at the "Ultimate band list" website. it lists the tracks but not the artists. It looks like the track you're talking about is "Frankenstein" by Edgar Winter.

The track list is below, I'm sure if you need any help with the artists for the other tracks, there will be plenty of volunteers!

1 Fire (2:56)

2 Strange Kind of Woman (3:43)

3 Little Bit of Love (2:32)

4 Devil's Answer (3:24)

5 Frankenstein (4:45)

6 Silver Machine (4:23)

7 Race With the Devil (3:33)

8 Witch (2:28)

9 Radar Love (5:05)

10 Love Like a Man (3:04)

11 Standing in the Road (3:43)

12 Hold Your Head Up (3:43)

13 Backstreet Luv (3:35)

14 Living in the Past (3:18)

15 In My Own Time (3:33)

16 Slip & Slide (3:30)

17 Sympathy (2:43)

18 Joybringer (3:25)

19 Northern Lights (3:29)

20 Jig-A-Jig (3:37)

That's what I was looking for.  It is indeed Frankenstein by Edgar Winter.

I know all the other titles and artists, but this one's been troubling me for a while.  I'd been to the progarchives site a while ago and when I found the tape today (and listened to it loudly in the car!!) I thought that someone here might know what it was.

Thanks EL.

Former BBC Radio One DJ, Alan Freeman  sampled  the synth effect from Frankenstein, and almost wore it out as a jingle on his Saturday afternoon rock show.

Artist/group order at least on the CD version (Polygram 516 398-2) is

Crazy World Of Arthur Brown
Deep Purple
Free
Atomic Rooster
Edgar Winter Band
Hawkwind
The Gun
The Rattles
Golden Earring
10 Years After
Blackfoot Sue
Argent
Curved Air
Jethro Tull
Family
Medicine Head
Rare Bird
Manfred Mann's Earthband
Renaissance
East Of Eden

Which seems to follow the track listing given previously.

Some latterday prog purists may gripe with the choice of bands e.g. Free, Deep Purple, 10 Years After, but  their recordings would been accepted as progressive music back before 1972. Gun (one of those one hit wonder bands) became Baker-Gurvitz Band; Medicine Head was "discovered" by John Peel who now claims he always thought prog was "bo**o**s", while Golden Earring was/is strictly a straight Dutch rockband who got some fame  following in the  footsteps of Focus.

Race With The Devil is a cool song (covered by Judas Priest and Girlschool!)

Edit: I forgot! WELCOME TO THE FORUM, KingHarvest!
