My first purchase was the Beatles White album upon its release and I clearly remember the huge impact it had socially, artistically, politically and of course, musically. The rock world went from bargain basement riff based 3 minute rock 'n roll to expanded , orchestral pieces that simply combined every instrument and every structure possible. "Revolution #9" in particular was such a shocker , it played everywhere as a protest (read anti-pop) song. Sure the Moodies and Procol were already there but they were caught up in Beatlemania too.
I never post anything anywhere without doing more than basic research, often in depth.

I think it's obvious that it would of happened eventually without The Beatles. Revolver and especially Sgt.Pepper just skyrocketed the artistic ambition artists had. It was blueprint, per say, of what progressive rock wanted to do later on.

They were largely influential to music in general - prog included.

I've heard a lot of conflicting statements from people over the years as to the impact  and influence that the Beatles had on early Prog groups like King Crimsom and Genesis. Some dismissed any influence out of hand. Some claimed that Epitaph could never have been concieved without Strawberry Fields coming first, while some said that Prog was a natural progression for Rock that would have come about without the Fabs. What do you think?
