What did I slip into a coma? I was completely unaware that George Duke had passeed on August 5th at the age of 67. How tragic he was young. And a fantastic keyboard player and songwriter. He will be sadly missed. Listen to George on Zappa's earlier stuff or The Aura Will Prevail solo album. He was a giant! RIP - George Duke!

Duke's keyboard solos on Zappa's early 1970s albums were among the most lyrical and exciting ever recorded, easily matching the work of Wakeman and Moraz.

I heard the news today while I was at work. I immediately started listening while working on a big document. I sat there listening with tears coming out of my eye's while I edited and formatted and typed. It was tough. I used to really be into George when I was younger, lost touch, then got back in touch. I just got a copy of his latest album "Dreamweaver". He sounds young as ever on it. Stylish, talented, reserved, poignant, and silly as always. It's like he didn't age at all. Then this news hit... Just as I rediscovered him again... AND IT HURT BAD. I heard he just lost his heart when his wife died a year ago. He made his latest album and dedicated it to her and then passed away. What a great guy and what a way to go. My favorite song was "I Need You Now" off Brazilian Love Affair. It's not a hard rocking or complex tune, there just seems to be SO MUCH FREAKING feeling in it. It makes me smile and cry altogether today. I will miss George IMMENSELY. Prog, pop, or whatever... I really liked his music. Edited by cemego - August 06 2013 at 22:28 |

Decided to throw on "Feel" in honor of Duke. Kinda forgot how good of an album it is, a nice slice of mid-70s jazz-fusion, with Frank Zappa on guitar for a couple of songs, and he rips it.

The world lost a great musical force today!! George Duke was a huge
inspiration;one of the pioneers of the jazz fusion movement and a
incredibly talented player, composer and producer; and has inspired many
American and Swiss, and European keyboardists and musicians this Los
Angeles guitarist has worked with throughout the years.George was always
a humble, happy human being and so funky;plus a fantastic composer.

RIP. One of the greatest jazz / fusion keyboardists ever. One of the reasons I initially got into Zappa was because of George Duke's playing.

R.I.P. George. I love The 1976 Keyboard Album, which took a long time to get a CD reissue. George played everything on it, of course.

Chicago Tribune did a nice writeup:
I saw George with Frank Zappa about 1974, it was great!

I saw it mentioned on FB but there's nothing about it on his official website. Strange...
