Though I would be hesitant to call von Trier's series, The Kingdom, a classic, it certainly is much , much recommended (by myself at least.)

The best movies are one of three things:
1/ about personal honour
2/ food
3/ somehow blending comedy with melancholia...successfully

Kingdom is #3 formula.



I have not experienced any of Trier's other work because, frankly, the themes explored seem rather common. Anything to recommend?

By the way - excellent director choices there ,Moshkito! (But I would not have included Cronenberg)

Bunuel is the toughest because so few people today have seen anything to know what we're talking about. One should see "Viridiana", "The Exterminating Angel", "Belle du Jour" and at least "The Discreet Charm of the Bourgoiisie". I personally like "El Gran Calavera" done way before all these and they show what is to come later, "Los Olvidados" is fantastic but I am not sure many folks today can see it.
 
Roman Polanski is ... a very clever director. Catch "Visions of Light" (about cinematographers) so you can have a better idea of what he does in his films.
 
Ingmar Bergman is a tough to watch because it is always so "deep", and film intelectuals think there is more meaning in those "thinking pauses" than there is acting or anything else. But there are gems here and there that are worth watching. The best of it all, was always Sven Nykvist's cinematography which made Ingmar's films look even better than they really were. On the hands of anyone else, I doubt that Ingmar would have been as acclaimed.
 
Terry Gilliam is by far the director I like the most for the past 20 years. Before that, it was Nicolas Roeg.
