A quick check round other major prog bands showed a fair selection of Genesis, but most other bands such as Yes, Rush and ELP had only 2 or 3 CDs each, whereas HMV have a whole section on Metal featuring all sorts of bands I've never heard of.

I know you can order them over the Web, but this doesn't beat rummaging through the racks in a shop.

Is this a local Essex thing or is it more widespread?

In the West Edmonton Mall (the largest mall in the world) there is a massive two floor HMV with a very impressive selection of prog.  There are some bands which are missing or understocked (King Crimson, curiously enough), but for the most part they have a very good selection, especially of Zappa.

the Bath FOPP has the remastered "In A Glass House" and that's it. Quite a poor range of the more obscure prog artists, but that goes without saying.

I guess I'll have to resort to mail order then. I just like rummaging through the racks in record shops though.

My local HMV (Douglas, Isle of Man) is pretty good for film and comedy
DVDs, not bad for metal and OK for mainstream music. I wouldn't look in
there for prog, though - mail order is a much better bet.

I take it all back (well, some of it). Popped into the Leadenhall Market HMV today and they had Pepper's Ghost by Arena and Liveosity by Pendragon. Went for Pendragon as it's got a DVD with it. No Gentle Giant or VDGG though.

If you have tower records around you then that might be worth a visit, they should a very good selection, the ones close to me have not only big 5 prog, but caravan, focus, vdgg, gentle giant, zappa, flower kings, etc....and all of their albums pretty much. the prices are a bit steep though, $13-15 on older cds and $17-19 on new releases.

I've pretty much exhausted the selection of Leeds HMV and Virgin. Why do Virgin sell for a quid more than HMV - typically £16.99 against £15.99? Even told the HMV manager about this site to get some ideas - hasn't done any good though. Now using t'internet more now. Only problem is that you can't listen before buying as much and I don't have much patience. That's why this site is so good

Mine seem to have a reasonable stock of the more popular names.

But when it comes to metal, they don't have much.

It also seems that they need to get their genres sorted out too.

Big branches of HMV in city centres can be surprisingly good for prog, especially during the sales. Over the last couple of years I've picked up remastered versions of all my favourite Tull albums for about a fiver each, and you'll usually find some of the better known Genesis and Yes albums as well (though rarely King Crimson for some reason). The big HMV in Oxford Street has a good selection of prog, and also has well stocked Jazz and World sections as well if that kind of thing floats your boat. If you're there, however, about 10 minutes walk away in Berwick Street (darkest Soho) there is Selectadisc, which is good for all manner of weirdness (they're the only central London stockists of Ruins that I know of, f'rinstance) and also often has some remakable bargains.

Regular high street branches are usually badly stocked, but can be worth checking. Chasrity shops are also worth checking out, but obviously they're very hit and miss. Happy hunting!

I can find yes, tons of floyd - shame im not a huge fan. and ive seen genesis

but ive looked for camel, king crimson, gentle giant etc. and the closest ive come is to seeing the little divider that says "king crimson" on it, where CDs should be. and this is in quite a few stores and that was the best ive found
I asked Bobby Dylan
I asked the Beatles
I asked Timothy Leary
But he couldn't help me either
They call me the seeker

Further north, off Byres Road in Glasgow is "Lost in music". Excellent for prog (new and used), with an entire rack dedicated to "Modern progressive rock".

If you are within reasonable distance of Leicester try  Ultima Thule, (they are on line via Ultima Thule Audion).  Alan Freeman and brother buy wholesale direct from Europe, so there isn't extra 3 or 4 quid added to the price of a CD, found in the bigger UK shops/stores who buy in imports via Greyhound Imports.

I dont even bother looking in HMV now, if its prog I'm after. Always buy on line.

The only Branches of HMV that have come up with the goods for me have been in New York, Toronto & London, and I'm not hauling my arse up to London every week to buy CD's!

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

Never found out of London  HMV or Virgin stores, particular good at stocking my sort of music - although surprised to find a Godspeed CD in the Leicester branch over the new year - as an expensively priced import. Instead learned that other stockists are around locally, who being less of a bureaucracy are more efficient  when you have to order much of this stuff, and usually cheaper.

Here in Loughborough a Virgin has just opened but some CDs are 6 quid (30 to 40%) more expensive than can be found the two local indies who have been here a long time - and when one of the indies also has a 2nd hand department, Virgin can be extremely expensive. So if I can't find it I might order it locally, but nowadays more likely order it cheaply from Amazon.UK or have a friend in the USA get it there - strip away the packaging - and ship it across, on a CD for CD exchange basis to avoid money moving through banks and across the Atlantic.

the yes selection at my hmv (livingston) has all the 70's ones and the newer compilations plus 90125. also has a decent king crimson collection from what i can remember. but as for its only good for mainstream, i disagree. its the best shop for selection in my area. pity the value for money sucks. hmv is only good for the sale where i got most of my yes for a fiver a cd, and most recently, a fairly rare joanna newsom cd for 8 quid.
