I own a Lite Ash Tele, which sounds great through my 50 watt Marshall tube amp. I have it set so it doesn't really have that twangy crap at all. It has the most amazing clean tone.

Arguing on the internet is a lot like the special olympics - even if you win, you're still retarded.

I (technically my dad) own a Telecaster Bass actually! It is a weird thing from the early 70s that is based on the original 51 P-Bass but with a huge humbucking passive pickup. Its actually worth quite alot now. Its the bass I usually play (until I get a Rick soon haha).

Here's my current guitar model (except that mine is in transparent blue):
The most amazing thing about this guitar is the neck-through construction.

Have you ever heard anything from Scott Henderson or Greg Koch?

Scott Henderson plays a tele? damn. My world is shattered.
He is awesome though (He and Victor wooten and Steve smith together are insane!).
My prejudice comes from the fact that most bands I've seen use a telecaster with some sort of fender amp, which tend to add to the twang factor. I like a smooth tone from a fender, like SRV's strat. but overall, I prefer gibson guitars.
on top of it all though, I think telecasters are ugly. so
|
I just wanted to scare you ... both play Stratocasters ... I was rather referring to the Twang. But I think that Greg Koch uses a hybrid ... a Telecaster with a Strat vibrato system, if I'*m not mistaken. So he has a Telecaster neck (and tone).
|
Interesting.... no matter what, a strat will always sound better than a tele. It's the way theyre built and the pickups they use. but of course nothing sounds better than a les paul, except maybe the occasional PRS.

Got a late '70s Jap Tele that's just great. It does need a little repair work now but it has served me extraordinarily well and took a real beating during the 90s when it was gigged every week for three solid years. It's a great guitar and suprisingly versatile - you can get a lot more from it than just that nasal country twang. Find one on ebay and splurge.

The Line6 Variax does a good job at creating Strat/Tele sounds. I don't know of any other guitars that use the kind of wood that is necessary to create such a tone, so I would recommend the Variax ... combined with the POD XT, you can even switch guitar sounds from the floorboard. And the Variax+POD XT together cost about as much as a good Fender Telecaster ...
