Floyd, no, because they didn't really have a whole lot going on rhythmically anyway. But Beatles songs would sound a little better if played by a better drummer with updated techniques. Ringo was good but had his limitations. Their songwriting is so good that the absence of a little flair where there is scope for it doesn't really hurt but, for instance, somewhat more stylish work at the drums would not hurt on a song like Got to Get You Into My Life.

If it matters, I too totally agree with Dean.

I don't really have a preferance, so I'll not vote.
I agree with Dean, I've not heard any Floyd or Beatles where I thought a better drummer was required. The songs were not ruined by the drumming. That may be the test. Additionally the music of Pink Floyd and The Beatles didn't require a Carl Palmer or Bill Bruford. By and large they just needed solid time keeping, and some subtlety. Both delivered the goods.
It's not so much that Ringo & Mason were bad drummers, it's just that the prog music movement is stuffed to the gills with virtuoso musicians, so comparisons are pretty unfair.

Ringo covered alot more different styles and grooves than Nick ever did. George Martin has often talked about how solid Ringo was in the studio.

Best Scott Walker song ever ... probably.
I like Mason, but I find Ringo to be more versatile in his chops ... in a subtle way.
edit: Yes, they both can count time, I think.

I voted for Ringo. I appreciate his drumming more and more over time. Sadly maligned drummer. How come Charlie Watts never gets any stick? (pun not intended)

Both are adequate players, I'd say Mason though because he was a little bit more dynamic.

Perhaps considered the weakest link on both bands, which drummer do you like better, Nick Mason or Ringo Starr? |
I personally believe both are very under-rated, and their dinstincitve sounds were instrumental to the success of their respective bands.

Both underrated, IMO, they weren't sooooo bad. See how Portnoy plays Ringo on Transatlantic's Live in Europe, and Nick has played at least 1 song in 7/4 isn't it?
I think Nick did some good jazzy drumming on his "Carla Bley's" solo Fictitious Sports. My vote goes to him.

I like both. Mason was brilliant in his own way and I challenge anyone to sound like he did on those early Floyd albums. It's about feel - not counting out time signatures. Ringo did some great drumming on Revolver methinks even going for the toms at some points.
Voted for Mason because I just watched the Pompeii vid.
