Topic: Flying Colors release debut album(Morse, Portnoy+) Posted: December 02 2013 at 16:55 |
^ It was released in November 2008, and the vocalist is female, so somewhat unlikely to have anything to do with Messrs Morse & co.

I ran across this album on eMusic. I assume that it has nothing to do with this Flying Colors, but the performance of Bible stories does make it sound like something that Neal Morse would be involved with.

Listening to it now, and it's certainly not pop music, though perhaps that was their aspiration (or inspiration) for some of the tracks. In general though it strikes me as watered down Neal Morse music with a really great guitarist and a lame singer (for my taste, I don't really see what the point was of having him). Not bad, but not something I have any desire to hear again.

Depending on your point of view, Neal Morse could count as a prog genius, but at least four of the five members are either actively involved in the prog community or played a viable role in its development. I think.
Having heard it, however, as far as I'm concerned... it's plenty darn proggy. It's not pop at all. My friends who like pop hated it. Couldn't differentiate between Flying Colors and Dream Theater. It's just mild prog with good choruses and melodies.

I don't really count any as a prog genius actually.

I can't believe this isn't listed.
All but one member is a prog genius. The songs are melodically proggy. Bu because it isn't symphonic or obscure or because they have a sense of pop to them, they are ruled out?
Shame on you Progarchives.com.
The Beatles are here. This band should be too.

What I really like is the interaction between Steve Morse and Neal Morse they do some incredible melodies and harmonies between the keys and the guitar. I would love to hear more of that in something more proggy but this CD is pretty great.

In my opinion, Casey's vocals are no better or worse than Neal Morse's. In fact, the 2 voices blend well on songs where they're both singing (like in Blue Ocean).

MacPherson sounds great. I'm going to go check out his other stuff, I quite like that sort of heavy alternative rock style.

They should get into the archives,at least in PR because all the members except MacPherson are in bands in our database.
And I dig the album, good stuff.

Going to add to this now that I've got mine. It's good. Maybe not very proggy, but I really like it. Melodic and strong, the vocalist is great, music sounds like diverse alternative rock, the prog is definitely there, so it should get into the archives, even if just as Prog Related.

I've heard a couple of tracks off this one! Really looking forward to hearing the whole thing!
Prog or not I can't say. Proggish, yes. But I'm looking more towards the opener or closer to see the progginess, and I haven't heard those. What I have heard is definitely a great amount of very fun music.

Yea you aren't missing anything. |
I make this comment about Flying Colors having bought ALL Transatlantic & Spock's Beard and most Steve Morse CDs & Dixie Dreg CDs... The video seems like a crass attempt to go commercial with some boy-singer de jour in the pop rock world. I hope I am wrong.
But I really am typing here to say how cool I think Horizon's new Gabriel avatar is.
Very nice m8, very nice. Where is that picture from?

Hmm, after seeing & hearing the posted promo clip.... hmm..
I never thought music had to be "prog" or any such label to be good, So I don't need famous progressive rock
artists to get excited. Having said that, the names in the band are excitement enough for anybody who enjoys good music and not some new pop sensation being sold as music. So... yes I am eager as anybody I supose.
But...
Have you guys heard that absolute crap - garbage - redundant - cliched every garage band sound - that starts around 2:24 of the video???
A tired cliche of commercial hard rock kiddie-band that has been recycled since Black Sabbath over 50 years ago...
I don't get it. Unless, the prog musicians here are trying to cash in on the commercial side of the mu$ic bizz...
I don't care for Green Day, but why would anybody want 50 year olds trying to be Green day?
Hmm....
