I don't think it is because they do not make progressive rock music, it is rather much likely that it is because they make simple pop music.

Painful mainstream. Binary. Typically 80's FM rock.

Let me get this right. Some Bozo has a real bash at U2 and as a consequence you like U2 even less? sorry I don't get it! |

Let it be knownst to all that I give less than a sh*te about Bono's and/or other U2 members' political personal views...but I was just reading the cover story about U2's guitarist, The Edge in Guitar World (go figure), and he said something that pissed me off a lot. I should have expected this...but I didn't. By the way, Guitar World in no way respects nor represents prog in any way that I can recognize thus far. GW: Even so,did you feel as if you were, to some degree, outsiders? The ethos of Seventies punk rock was so anti-rock star-anti-big. The Edge: It wasn't so much anti-rock star as it was anti-sh*te music. Punk rock was a response to all the boring, pretentous bands. It was about getting back to essentials and remembering what rock and roll was all about--that it should be political and it should have passion; that it should play a social role in the community, and that it affects peoples' lives. It sure affected my life. I'm convinced that the worst thing that ever happened to rock was the whole Seventies progressive-rock, jazz-fusion period. Music got up it's own arse. No passion It was real naval-gazing crap. Now, I should have expected this from someone who was influence by punk rock. But...NO PASSION! Just shut your mouth and play your echoed guitar and pretend that you still make good music. Your glory days are over! |

Nothing much wrong with U2 (but T2 was better), apart from Bono's dabbling in international politics. And remember they started as a Dublin based Yes-covers band................

One of my friends (who hates U2) told me about this site, but i never knew the address or went there. This guy who makes fun of U2 is right, though he never elaborates on anything he says and tends to just think up the best comments. As I said in my first post, I think How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb sucks (except for "City of Blinding Lights," which is U2's best song since something off of Achtung Baby). And if you hate U2 because of their new stuff, listen to their stuff from the 80's and Achtung Baby. If you have, then you have every right to think they still suck. |

One of my all-time favourite bands. Especially the album War, and songs like New year's day, With or without you and Pride are absolute classics.

http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=11worst Read this. I didn't like U2 before I read it, but I dislike them even more now. Keep in mind I don't agree with EVERYTHING this guy says. |

I've always crinded when I've heaerd Rattle and Hum. I've only seen the movie but how different is the recording? It's too "country" music for me. They sound like they're trying too hard to be an American band, which is basically what ended up of them. For that reason I don't like The Joshua Tree as much as their earlier stuff. |

I own and enjoy all their albums up to and including The Joshua Tree (a
desert island album to be sure). At Rattle & Hum and Achtung Baby I
feel they were already on the decline, and upgraded my cassette
versions of these two recordings to CD. Everything after Achtung Baby
is mindless pop (pun intended)...

Hate 'em. Never heard anything good from them and always felt their music is very annoying.
But then again, I "hate" almost all commercial music so they are not anything special in that sense. I just like PROG!!! |

What I heard of them didn't convince me much. The singing is absolutely boring, and the guitar... ahem.

From Unforgettable Fire to Achtung Baby! , U2 was virtually flawless. IMHO, Before that , they were just an average pop band and from Zooropa on, they should've quit while they were ahead! During those 4 albums , they became artists! |

let's just stay above the moral melee

I liked 'em from War to Achtung ... I do think they've got some bad albums though ... Boy and Pop, to name a couple of extremes ... why does everyone not like 'em? The popularity, for one ... also, I think Bono can be a bit of a smarty pants sometimes ... and lately because they seem to be going through that caricature (correct spelling?) stage ... but I think most of us who are open to non-prog would think that U2 have made some worthy music at some point in their career ... It's easy to forget how powerful a song Sunday Bloody Sunday is ... until you hear it again |

"Death to Utopia! Death to faith! Death to love! Death to hope?" thunders the 20th century. "Surrender, you pathetic dreamer.”
"No" replies the unhumbled optimist "You are only the present." |
