OK - received 'The incident', 'Fear of a Blank Planet' and 'Insurgentes' albums all with the DVD-A (and Insurgentes also comes with the original release CD) and checked them all. I also checked the DVD-A versions of 'Lightbulb Sun' and 'Stupid Dream' that I have and yes, Stupid Dream has no 24 bit stereo mix on it at all, but all the others do.

Best I can figure is that when they ran out of stock (in 2007 they sold out of these), the re-issue DVD-A's were missing the 24 bit tracks most likely as a mistake. It doesn't bother me personally as the 5.1 mix gets all the airplay at home from me.

Gratuitous photo of recent arrivals below Tongue

having the 24-bit version is only useful if you actually want to reprocess the tracks...
It can come in handy if you have heavy digital processing on your audio chain.

For listenning, 16bits already offers 96dB of SNR which is largely sufficiant to model all the level variations the human ear can hear.

I have the Lightbulb sun remaster, and it does contain a 24 bit 2.0 mix. I have no clue about the others you own, and would be interested to hear!

Interesting - I will check my copy of this (although I tend to only listen to the 5.1 mix on the home system) I also have the Lightbulb Sun DVDA and have just ordered FOABP, The Incident and Insurgentes all in this format - will check those (when they arrive) and report back.

ok! re ripping the 16 bit version!

I still wonder if its just my DVDa that is defective, or if they're all like that. I also think it is strange that every other PT remaster does contain the 24 bit stereo version (whether its better or not). Whatever!

Maybe I can write SW a lon letter telling him I want some of the large fortune of money I spent on his work back LOL

^ Mixing the 5.1 mix down to stereo doesn't make a lot of sense - it will definitely sound inferior to the stereo mix. As others have said already in this thread: You can't really tell 24bit from 16bit. DVD/DVDA offer the possibility of 24bit, and I welcome it - particularly because nowadays masters are often recorded in 24bit resolution, so why not make them available to consumers as is, since DVD/DVDA makes that possible. But that doesn't mean that you should make it a priority to get a 24bit recording ... you will not be able to tell it apart from the 16bit version by ear.

All right. Thanks for that response.

The 5.1 works fantastic, and I love it, just doesn't work well on my computer system, which is only stereo. Out of curiosity I tried mixing down the 5.1 to stereo, but it sounds very quiet. Ill just stick with the CD version then!

It's not a big deal as far as I'm concerned ... you can't even tell high bitrate mp3 from 16 bit CD. They got the labelling wrong, but the important value on the DVDA is the 5.1 remix, and that you can tell apart from any stereo mix in any bitrate/format.

I agree. But it is advertised as a selling feature, and isn't included with my product (from what I understand). Once again, can I tell the difference between 24 bit and 16 bit? no. Do I have an OCD? Yes. My logic is that I might as well rip the highest quality version for later (just in case they can biologically boost hearing in the future w/ implants of some sort! LOL).

Just before the remaster came out I got a pricey copy of the original release.  Either the music is good or it isn't, bits don't enter into it.

I currently purchased the 2006 re issue (Transmission records) of Stupid Dream by Porcupine Tree. The DVD promises a 5.1 surround sound mix as well as a 24 bit STEREO mix.

There is no 24 bit stereo mix on the DVD. Do I really care about the 24 bit stereo over 16 bit? no. It is frustrating though.

Anyone else notice this?
