Hmm - the physics of the pressing process would suggest that the first must be the best - but I'm open to any evidence that disproves it - I've never even been inside a presing plant, so I've only got 2nd hand information to go by.

Go to Half Price Books, if there's one in your area.

I've found a lot of prog stuff in there. But you really have to keep checking often, because there is new stuff all the time. It's really a treasure cove of vinyls.

And they're cheap too, I've seen them from fifty cents up to about four dollars.

I've found lots of King Crimson, Tull, Pink Floyd, a PFM record (), Genesis....

I can't explain why, i think this is more related to the global process of pressing. This is not an absolute rule, but many times its true.

How so?

This is news to me!

I was under the impression that the 1st presses (not the test presses) were the best, as you have a brand new (unworn) mother, hence the stamper will contain a more accurate reflection of the image.

eBay is one of the best places I know - especially if you're looking for original pressings.

There are sites that specialise in selling collectable vinyl, but all seem to be overpriced - they base their prices on the highest that the item has gone for on eBay, but eBay fluctuates like mad:

For example, I picked up a 1st press of ITCOTCK for £35, although I've seen them go for £350,  a copy of Led Zep IV for £5 - I've seen one go for £200+, and a copy of Glastonbury Fayre with all inserts for £40 (it typically fetches £300-£500).

Why go for an original press?

Simple.

They sound so much better than represses.

Does anyone know of any good places to buy prog records (vinyl) online besides eBay?  I've been going to a local record store that specializes in vinyl, but it is very rare to find good things.  I usually have to sift through mounds of Journey and Dan Fogelberg and Boston before, if I'm lucky, I find Genesis or Yes (havent found any KC or PF yet... and forget about anything more obscure than that)

any suggestions?
