Although I think Stalker is Tarkovsky's best, Solaris is damned good too.

When you're feeling strong enough, you need to tackle Stalker (if you didn't already).

Stalker is great, a true masterpiece of sci-fi cinema.

2001, not the best ever but better than Solaris for me.

I agree with this and add The Mirror to the list. But 2001 is not my favourite Kubrick either.

2001 is pretty much my favorite film ever (one of them at least). I like Solaris too, but I don't even think it's Tarkovsky's best. I like both Stalker and Andrei Rublev more.

I love Solaris and am indifferent towards 2001.

They are both great and overrated in their own ways.

For quite a while, I used to consider 2001 to be the permanent and unshakable pillar of cinema. However, in recent months, I've been really branching out and experiencing many other great directors, and realized that my original notion may have not been entirely correct. One of my new favorite films is Solaris by Andrei Tarkovsky. It has many of the things that made me fall in love with 2001, with its gorgeous cinematography and ethereal atmosphere, but it is also quite a bit different too. 2001 reaches to great heights and tells of an epic journey that is both technically and entertainingly superb, while Solaris works on a more interpersonal level, and admittedly, has a humanity that Kubrick's films often lack. I'll admit, this isn't easy for me, but I think Solaris takes the cake. Regardless, both are currently in my top five films and will probably remain there for quite a while.
