No I am not at all. It would be interesting to know how well the scores correlate with actually being a musician. Thanks for the reassurance anyway! |

I would say, do not take it too seriously. It is like the so-called 'intelligent' tests you sometimes find on the web. To detect, if you are musical or not, better ask a good music teacher (one you can trust). Also I do not know, if you are a musician? I think people have advantages in the test, who already have a certain time experience as an active musician. Saying that, you need not be a musician to like and fully appreciate complex music. And I completely ignored the 'listening recommendations' after the test. That's bullsh*t IMHO. I had some 'mediums' in the rhythm test (although I see it as one of my strengths) because I'd rather hit a drum than the keyboard bar (my keyboard has a build-in resistance which slows down the press). And those beeps were irritating. Also the memory test: it was irritating that the melody was played in a different pitch. I had to really concentrate on the relative intervals. I had the first wrong because I did not realize it at first. People with perfect pitch might have difficulties. Edited by Formentera Lady - January 24 2011 at 02:04 |

One thing I did find very difficult was the melody memory test. In real life, I don't think my memory for melody is bad and I can usually whistle or sing a passable version of melodies that I can recall. However, in the test, the second melody nearly always sounded 'out of tune' to me, which I found very distracting.

None of you posting your scores is making me feel any better! I comfort myself with the thought that perhaps only those getting the high scores are bothering to post.
More seriously, I am interested in what is being revealed by the test. The implication is that someone like me with a low musical perception score isn't capable of appreciating anything but the most mundane pop music. And yet from a very young age I have always sought out music that is interesting to me rather than what was fashionable or popular. Generally speaking, the stuff I have liked has turned out to be what is considered to be relatively complex - that has never been a conscious criterion on my part and has not been true of everything I have liked, but I think is a side effect of not being easily satisfied. Like, I guess, many people here, music is something of an obsession for me, something that I have been prepared to spend a lot of money on over the years to find those pieces that hit the spot for me. It doesn't feel to me like I am not perceiving the qualities of the music I love. But maybe it's like being colour blind and not knowing any better. |

It's not about revealing my personal information, I always lie about that anyway. It's just an unnecessary hassle and I refuse to register anywhere unless it's absolutely necessary.

To register: They ask for name, nickname, gender, date of birth, email address. The only sensitve thing is the email address. I use lots of temporary email addresses for occasions like this, that I can delete after usage. The rest can be simply made up. Just make sure to enter a birth year that makes you older than 18. |

Enthusiasm for music: 73%
Musical perception: 99% Emotional connection: 70% Social creativity: 90% Musical curiosity: 90% Genre group: didn't get a single group right. Match the beat: 11/18 Tap to the beat: High for all except 3 and 8 (medium)' Melody memory: Right for all but no.3. I guess that makes sense because I am an Indian (our system emphasises melody a lot) and a wannabe singer, so I am strong on melody. I can keep beat but with those beeps, it got a bit confusing if the beeps were starting at the right place or no. For a proghead, I am satisfied with my score for emotional connection. I wouldn't have done it anyway because of the length, but the registration was just an additional slap in the face. Here's the lazy link if you don't want to cut-paste it. Edited by Henry Plainview - January 22 2011 at 23:44 |

Yeah, I might have done better on some of the tests if I hadn't got bored and checked PA again while doing them. And it wasn't playing nice with Firefox for some reason, I had to switch to Chrome to see my results. |

"Just" 25 minutes? And I need to register? Thanks, but I'll do something that is slightly less of a waste of a half hour.
