Have people here heard the radio edit of Alanis Morrisette's "You Oughta Know"? They cut out a few complete lines of lyrics.

Lounès Matoub, although being the most popular kabyle singer, never got any airplay in his own country. This great singer/poet was murdered in 1998. Edited by lucas - January 16 2011 at 15:22 |

I read that "Louie, Louie" was often banned from several radios: the lyrics are not very understandable, and it seems the reason of this banning ("if we don't understand the lyrics, they must be very obscene!")
There's also the famous example of Lou Reed's "Take a walk on the wild side": some versions sound "bip bip bip bip, take a walk on the wild side, tutu tulututu, bip bip bip" |

Pop culture/music in all it's forms is forbidden in many countries of the world, but I don't know if that qualifies for this thread.

I am old enough to have seen the two Sullivan shows with the Stones and the Doors.
A few years before that Elvis was on the show and the camera was only allowed to show him from the waist up.
Remember, Elvis the pelvis was his nickname.

The US has always had more censorship than a lot of other countries. As far as album covers, there was Blind Faith with the nude teen. Scorpions "Love Drive" was actually released with the original cover but was soon replaced. The label put colored shrink wrap with a sticker on the covers that had already been printed.
The cover of "In Trance" was the same as the original but the slightly exposed nipple was blacked out. Edited by GaryB - January 16 2011 at 10:46 |

Huck Finn, the blotting of cigarettes from old photos, the removal of stereotype characters from 1950s cartoons...it ain't just music. Where does "revisionism via modern standards" end? |

A song for an Bollywood flck in India which had the title "what is under my blouse" was banned from the film by the authorities. The lyrics was referring to the heart which is also covered up by a blouse in addition to the two parts of the anatomy the cencorship government banned the song for. The song became a hit in the underground markets.

The Kinks single Lola was initially banned because it referred to Coca Cola. The lyric was changed to Cherry Cola.
Then of course there was "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood which was banned when a DJ decided it was filthy.
Jane Birkin and Serge gainsbuough's "Je 'aime.." was banned because it was deemed too steamy by the BBC, as was a song called "Wet Dream" by Max Romeo and pretty much everything by Judge Dread. When playing the chart rundown, Alan Freeman was not even allowed to say the name of the Max Romeo single.
Paul McCartney and Wings single "Hi hi hi" was banned for alleged drug references. Even Harry Nilsson managed to get his single "You're breaking my heart" banned, but lyrically that was probably fair enough.

You might be thinking of the "This album contains material that a truly free society would neither fear nor suppress" sticker he put on Frank Zappa Meets the Mothers Of Prevention. |

A) 666 by Aphrodite's Child, suffered a boycott of the most radical groups
that didn't allowed it's publication for 2 years due to: 1.- The red cover with the huge 666. 2.- The song Infinity with the Irene Papas orgasm 3.- They wrote "This album was written under the
influence of Sahlep"...The idiotic radical thought it was a Turkish demon
or a strong drug, when as a fact it is a non alcoholic beverage. B) The Rolling Stones song Satisfaction was banned in some radios, and during the presentation on The Ed Sullivan in show he prohibit the Stones to sing "Let's Spend the Night Together", and Sullivan wrote different lyrics fthat said "Let's Spend some Time Together, of course Jagger didn't accepted, but Sullivan couldn’t ban the group because they were too big. C) Also in the Ed Sullivan's Show, the producers request that Jim Morrison change the lyrics to “Light My Fire” for The Doors’ September appearance on the program. Morrison initially agrees to alter the lyric “Girl we couldn't get much higher” to a more innocent and silly phrase. During the live presentation , Morrison shoouts "Girl we couldn't get much Higher", making emphasis in the phrase and looking directly at the camera. The Doors were never again invited back to the program Iván Edited by Ivan_Melgar_M - January 16 2011 at 10:02 |

That's ridiculous. "It's Zappa, he has risqué lyrics in some of his songs, lets say all of them, and in every album."
