I don't think they can continue without him ... you can't replace an original and someone with the acuteness to deatil and playing ability that he brings to the concert, which makes it different each time and still sound ... superlative. Belew would miss that contrast ... not to mention that he, by himself, is not really that great ... have you heard his latest solo? ... yeah .. he learned a lot from Robert ... like nothing! ... let's go play rock'n'roll!
Ohhh ... the encore probably would be Chuck Berry to show how good Belew was!

"It is impossible to achieve the aim without suffering." I picked up that Fripp was nearing retirement when he performed Soundscapes for the audience while backing up Porcupine Tree, who were recording the "Arriving Somewhere" concert DVD at Chicago's Park West theater, 11–12 October 2005.
He looked very tired, and he had a retrospective slide show while he performed, illustrating his career over the years. I definitely took that as a farewell gesture. BTW, I first saw King Crimson in Chicago during the LTIA tour, but sadly, Jamie Miur was not on the bill. However, it was quite stellar!! Backup band was Peter Frampton!! Amazing times....

21st Century Schizoid Band may still do some tours, I guess... and anyone wantint go hear old Crimson may even find that more rewarding than King Crimson... I don't know, still haven't heard them... and they still miss one very important thing... Fripp himself.

Sometimes words have no meaning
other times ... words are not enough
and some people
are afraid
of the vision
of the light
of the work
of the love
of the music
...
do you really care
in the end
about what anyone says?
Does it mean anything to you?
...
is this simply a selfish reason
...
laziness
...
I never read
...
I buy what the world tells me to
and only listen to what
someone said ... is good
...
there is a life out there
it is not measured in your marks
or ideas
or feelings
...
talk
talk
jive talk
elephant talk
...
silence
...
silence
...
let me meditate
...
the meaning of life
...
the meaning of
...
there are not enough words
...
but worse
...
I doubt that you care
I'm not sure that it matters
...
I choose a peace
...
and quiet
...
words have nothing to do
with it
you can speak all day
quietly
lovingly
tell someone you love them
a thousand times
...
and all you can say
...
in the end
...
is ...
why so talky?

Hi,
This is also the time when other bands can nail down their own work and beauty ... so without needing to tell you who, all of those bands that call themselves anything ... let's see you stand up and make a difference!
There is no greater eulogy, or appreciation, than doing it! Not talking about it!

Hi,
Thanks for that link ... I have been reading some of it for some time and a lot of my comments were formulated with his comments in mind ... but more than anything else, the one thing that bothers me is the part that "fans" feel they have the right to demand someone to kiss their as$ ... and that is not right and not appropriate and not what rock music and music history has been about for a long time. ... and sometimes I think that a major music board like this one should help nail that down and not let people post stuff like that ... which is insulting to say the least. We have to have respect for the art and the music ... and stop "demanding" what we want ... all of the stuff we love was not a result of "what I want" ... but a result of someone doing "what they wanted" and we ended up appreciating it and thinking it was "progressive" and we're still listening to it 40 years later!
Not everyone, can fade in to the sunset with themselves in one piece, and allowing themselves to enjoy the rest of their time ... for an elderly gentleman it is incredibly tough to travel around the world like that and expect to have to be a pillow to everyone's desires, and sometimes plain rudeness ... and by the time that one adds up the amazing rip offs from so many record companies ... you can see the issues ... and one of these days, that virgin man is going to get his, because the number of people he has ripped off keeps increasing every day ... so he can get his colored balls and airplanes!
Good night ... and sleep tight, Robert ... and if time and place affords you a chance, some more of Robert's illuminations are always enjoyable and appreciated.
Thx a million ... not many have given us so much of their life and hide ... and asking for more would be an even bigger insult.

Belew somewhat recently said that he'd not heard Fripp say there wouldn't be any more tours. And there lies my only hope.

I think we must accept the fact that not only Robert Fripp, but many others like Ian Anderson, Jon Anderson, Peter Gabriel, etc, are getting to the point of retirement, and a well deserved one it is. After decades of touring, recording, composing music and all that it entails, especially when your music is not the most popular one, retirement is the next step for sure, and is closer than we think, or want to admit.
I just hope Robert finds a happy and peaceful life, and gets to enjoy whatever he chooses to do. Hopefully, we'll still get some music coming from him, but if not, his legacy will speak for him.

^ That's an interesting link, Alex, thanks. I haven't looked at his diary for ages.
Crimson are the only one of my favourite bands I have never seen live. On the very rare occasions they were playing in the UK, for some reason, I always had a conflicting date. Last time, I think, were my exams to qualify in my job. It would be a shame if I never got to see them, even if I am not keen on the recent material. |

Harry ... give it a rest ... Robert has never been into the fan/fame thing and is simply not interested in the type of comments and work that you are demanding off him.
He already gives in enough to fans and has done a couple of KC tours, but these are obviously too exhausting and not something that a man in his 60's has enough energy to put together and give everyone their favorites and top ten hits that KC had.
If you don't like his solo work and his own words for his own internal journey ... and appreciate the music that comes out of it ... it's time for you to get weened off KC. Just accept it ... and it's over ... there's other music out there for the fan in you!

Hi,
That one doesn't get me a lot ... but this one does ....
"There are many professional guitarists who, today, can do what I can only aspire to; this in both their playing & professional capacity. Most are also much younger. Performances in churches & places outside the field mediated by commerce; areas free of the expectations, anticipations & assumptions of the pro musician; and those that might be characterized as acts of worship, in a wide sense; these all continue to attract my attention. Which probably explains why I don’t feel that anything has finished here at the WFC. "
... and this is something that I keep writing about all the time ... that because of all the commercial stuff out there it is getting very difficult for people like him to be able to live their inner dream and do the work that they wish to do ... and the biggest problem we have here, is that we consider KC progressive and Robert on his own albums is so experimental and out there that ... we ignore him totally ... and as he says ... what would be characterized as his own act of worship, is probably treated here as ... garbage, and meaningless ... because it doesn't have any "progressive" ideas or descriptions, or time breaks or .... whatever.
It's the biggest hint that most music is not what we think it is ... and that the thing we call "progressive" is much more to do with that inner spirit ... that it has to do with anything else that we think ... and I'm not sure that we're capable, or willing ... to even consider that option!
There are many others that fall into that path ... including Ryuichi Sakamoto, Stomu Yamash'ta, Vangelis, Klaus Schulze ... but sadly, they will never get the credit for their intuitive work ... because it is not progressive!
So ... in the end, the commercial directions are the ones dictating the popular tastes ... and we suck it up ... and really ... it is about time we stop thinking that all this rock/pop stuff is called "progressive" or "prog" ... when it is nothing but a copy of the same thing that has been done before millions of times.
You decide if you want to be a part of a machine, or an original! Edited by moshkito - December 27 2010 at 16:35 |

Remember, Fripp makes these insinuatingly apocalyptic pronouncements on occasion (1974; 1984). I believe him, however, regarding the reformation when KC material comes into being (something like "when there is music only KC can play, they will do so"). A bit open-ended, but then, why should he hurry? It's not his style.
