After starting this thread (on like 5 forums) I decided to go and arange them all alphabetically, it took like an hour and a half to do.
It looks a lot less tidy to my eye than my own way, even though it is exactly as physically tidy.
Ah well, its done now, I'm one step further towards my goal of being less of a mental case.

Alphabetical for me with a section for new ones. Around once a year I have a sort out and shift newer purchases into the main collection.

I used to alphabetize but am now in the process of reorganizing by artist in order of interest. Stuff I listen to frequently is filed. The rest is, or will be stacked in a closet.

My method, tied directly to my mind and how I define everything in tiny catagories works really well and if I want something I can work out where it is in a heartbeat, based on how my brain works.
But most of my friends and family alphebtise and if they want soemthing of mine can't find it because my way makes no bloody sense and is unnesssecarily awkward and unintutive.

With me, I keep everything seperate like Games, DVDs and CDs
Within each they are broken down into genres, then into bands or directors, then they go left to right from oldest to newest,

BUT, each band/movie cluster is placed from left to right by fewest albums to most albums (slash films in a series)

So if you look at the very left of my shelf it would have the one Devil Driver cd I own, and to the very right you would find Wrath, the newest of six Lamb of God albums, which are the band from the same genre with the most cds.

Intuitive manner: I put once artist's CDs on the shelf, then next to his I put the CDs of the artist who has the strongest connection with the previous one, and so forth. Works perfect for me. One other thing that I try is to keep jewel cases and digipacks grouped, with as little as possible mixing.

All my CDs are listed from Atomic Rooster to Zappa in sliding draws. I have too many to fit in the draws though so I have a separate box of Beatles, and a box of Pink Floyd CDs. On a shelf I have put all the oddities, compilations and every Rush album. Vinyls are kept downstairs in crates with all the prog albums at the front in no real order. Cassettes are kept in a large container and rarely used these days. I have also recorded onto cassettes every prog album I have in case something happens to the CDs, though nothing has as yet. There is a method to the madness.

Same with me.
But because I study Czech Studies, I have a shelf reserved for music from the Czech republic only.

Same here.

I have them in a couple of these (and MAN, their prices have gone up!).

It's kind of splitted by genres, and within one artist/band the albums are ordered by year of release. Embarrassed

I go by artists, which makes it easier to find now that I have over 1500 CDs, and within the artist, I arrange them chronologically, from the first to the last. I have kept this system from the very beginning, so it's no problem to continue adding to it.

Alphabetical by artist then by year.  Lately I've been a bit of a slacker and just trying to be sure all an artist's stuff together.  However the collection gets moved back to the house once they are done enough with flood repairs.  It won't look much different from this:

The CDs were really well organized, the DVD's less so.  The LPs at the middle top survived (it's a collage of five areas of media.

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

I don't arrange them at all, much to the chagrin of my wife.

Yeah, I just go alphabetical by artist, and within the artist I go alphabetical by album title.  That's it.
