No, its just that more is not always better. The style is great as an element, but not necessarily as its own stylistic pigeon hole. It becomes kind of like reggae: great ingredient, but becomes redundant as a main dish. I love several bands which are frequently labeled Djent, but I find them to have a lot more than just the Djent thing happening. Animals as Leaders, 1980, Coprofago all hold on to there own corner of the market by maintaining contrast. I love that stuff. Periphery...meh...I respect that they are composing and performing very complex pieces, but it becomes a bit redundant in tits heavy handedness and complexity. I remember the very first song I heard by Meshuggah, Soulburn. When the drums came in I remember thinking, "Its like Pantera with some bizarre amorphous Mitch Mitchell beat". Then when the Holdsworthesque guitar solo came in, I kind of teared up a bit. I had been on about a 5 year new metal free diet and that song made my want to reacquaint myself with it. But few have had that effect on me since. Meshuggah, as a matter of fact, has worn thin. I still love to listen to None and DEI, but little else by them. Just my take on it. |

Search for any Meshuggah song on Youtube.
That middy guitar tone with lots of staccato = djent A typical Meshuggah riff could be onomatopoetically described as djent-djent-dje-dje-DJENT-djent djent-djent-dje-dje-dje-DJENT

Djent isn't limited to a certain kind of tuning but moreso the timbre of the guitar. It's sort of an onomatopoeia for the guitar's signature sound. Here's the example I always use: listen to the opening seconds of this song, that particular tone is djent. |

First,I hadn't created a poll.I had created a topic.Secondly, actually Djent is a metal sub-genre,not a prog sub-genre(I know that there are Djent bands here. These bands are progressive Djent metal). That's why my poll there's in General music discussions and not here. |

I do like Amimals as Leaders. Good band.
Am I correct in saying Djent is drop G tuning, or have I been misinformed? |

Yep, I am here.
Animals as Leaders do djent best: not full out but use it enough as a flavoring to make their songs taste more excellent. Cloudkicker is also absolutely incredible, though he's straying away from traditional djent stuff into more of his own shindig. Other musts for fans of the genre are Periphery, TesseracT, and Chimp Spanner. Meshuggah needs no mention ![]() I'll make sure to drop by with some other smaller djent bands I know of too.

These are the two bands I've recently checked out, both excellent. Though I have Beacons from Cloudkicker, I'll have to check out the rest of their discog. By the by, Cloudkicker's bandcamp page is pretty much my ideal for obtaining music - name your own price for downloads in almost any format you like (including FLAC), $10 for a physical CD. Just awesome.

Haken's "Aquarius" has some djenty tones during the metal sections.
And everyone must check out Fredrik Thordendal's solo album (Yeah, Meshuggah's lead guitarist) called "Sol Niger Within". It's Meshuggah + avant jazz.

I really dig Cloudkicker's The Discovery...which is free!
Animals as Leaders is a must for all metal fans, though it is Djent-related rather than true symphonic djent.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.
